Hostage Crisis At Clinton NH Campaign Office

Update: It's over. The guy surrendered. NY Times report here. The suspect has been identified as Leland Eisenberg, in his 40's, with a history of mental illness and previously known to authorities.

Update (TL): Live video news coverage here. Web coverage at WMUR. The Clinton Campaign has released this statement. There may still be two hostages.

****

A hostage crisis:

A man claiming to have a bomb strapped to his body burst into Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign office in Rochester, N.H., today and took at least two volunteers hostage, New Hampshire television stations reported.

"There is an ongoing situation in our Rochester, NH office. We are in close contact with state and local authorities and are acting at their direction," the Clinton campaign said in a statement.

The campaign confirmed to Manchester's WMUR that two workers were taken hostage. The report quotes a witness who said a woman and her baby were released by the hostage-taker.

The cops will keep this guy awake and talking until he goes to sleep or gives up.  They have the superior resources and I'd expect no harm will come to anyone.

    At least I hope so.

In the meantime, I'm going to go home, then go to the corner bar and raise a glass of Wild Turkey to the memory of Evel Knievel, who passed today.  At home.  In bed.  Of non-motorcycle-related causes.  And, probably, universally mourned.  We should all be so lucky.

that 2 of 2 hostages have been released. Reports are that a young woman with a baby ran from the office early on and alerted others of the situation and police were notified. Ssince then 2 women have been released after police arrival but it does not appear clear that no hostages remain.

about 3:15 ET, WMUR reported (and had video) of the second of two hostages being removed.  At 3:35, the media are still trying to confirm all hostages have been removed/released.

The perp apparently still is inside the offices and SWAT is trying to talk him out.

WMUR also reports the perp as a middle-aged male, is "well-known in the area as having a history of mental illness" and "told his son today to watch the news".

FDL has a link to the streaming video, also here

And, per FDL, it took the wingnuts 1 minute, 53 seconds (from the story moving on the wires) for a freeper to wonder whether HRC's own campaign was behind it.

    Good point. (none / 0) (#2)

1:53 looks to be about 53 seconds slower than it typically takes the moonbats to blame Rove for stuff...

and just hope this turns out alright. I became seriously distressed not just because of the lives involved here, but of the potential lives of campaign volunteers, staff, candidates, etc. all over the country. Will extremist opponents of certain candidates or parties start committing similar acts? Is there reason to worry about that?

Now that's not to say I don't worry about the lives of any and all people still in the office, including the perp. Along that thought path, does anyone know if the media has confirmed that all hostages are out or is it still inconclusive?

    Of course... (1.00 / 0) (#20)
