Des Moines Register Endorses Hillary Clinton

Calling her the "most prepared to lead," the Des Moines Register tonight endorsed Hillary Clinton as the Democratic candidate for President. A video from the Editorial board explaining their endorsement is here. "Every stage of her life has prepared her for the Presidency." The editors say while Obama inspired their imagination, Hillary inspired their confidence.

From working for children’s rights as a young lawyer, to meeting with leaders around the world as first lady, to emerging as an effective legislator in her service as a senator, every stage of her life has prepared her for the presidency.

That readiness to lead sets her apart from a constellation of possible stars in her party, particularly Barack Obama, who also demonstrates the potential to be a fine president.

....Determination to succeed and learning from her mistakes have been hallmarks of Clinton’s life....In the Senate, she has earned a reputation as a workhorse who does not seek the limelight.

Tested by rough politics and personal trials, she’s demonstrated strength, resolve and resilience.....Indeed, Obama, her chief rival, inspired our imaginations. But it was Clinton who inspired our confidence. Each time we met, she impressed us with her knowledge and her competence.

Congratulations, Hillary.

candidate, and it seems like a well laid out endorsement.  Though they pick Hillary who i wouldn't have picked, I think it was good that they essentially defined this as a two person race.  I also liked that while they weighted her experience over his they never declared him too inexperienced.

    They dis'ed JE though:

Edwards was our pick for the 2004 nomination. But this is a different race, with different candidates. We too seldom saw the "positive, optimistic" campaign we found appealing in 2004. His harsh anti-corporate rhetoric would make it difficult to work with the business community to forge change.

by Edwards is often directed at Hillary.  And, the Des Moines Register is run by Gannett Company, the largest media corporation in the country. Draw your own conclusions.

    Has she ever been experienced?
    Not necessarily stoned, but... beautiful.

it says "every stage of her life has prepared her" for the Presidency. Big difference between planning for it and life preparing one to be President.

It doesn't diss Obama, in fact it says he could make a good President some day....he's just not the one who's best equipped or prepared to lead now.

candidate. Did you know that she took on the Reagan administration--and won---in 1981?
That was when she was chair of the legal services corporation.
What strikes me about Hillary is how much she has given to the needy, the less fortunate, the victims.
That's a side of her that doesn't get enough attention.

some of these parts of her life story that are well known.
I also want to learn why the Irish love her so much. According to a little snippet I read, she was important in behind the scenes negotiations.

By the way, the cite for the battle with Reagan is p.131 of Bernstein's book. I don't have the book, but I got that from Wikipedia.

I think the DMR endorsement does not mean much.

But it has value in the confluence of events that will shape the narrative down the stretch.

read. When Gannet took over they cut their news coverage and reduced the size of their staff (in particular state wide circulation and news gathering staff) to increase their profit. I doubt very much if they will win a Pulitzer again (unless there is a big story in Des Moines).

those strongly committed to another candidate in Iowa, it could further cement the votes of those strongly committed to her, preventing them from switching, and push those on the fence over to her.

Edwards and Obama think they have a lock on the second tier candidates votes because (they say) she is rarely anyone's second choice. This could bump her numbers among that group.

So much though depends on turnout, which in turn may depend on weather -- and how many out of state students in college in Iowa return to vote -- news reports are they favor Obama.

What exactly is Hillary experienced at?  As first lady, she had one big initiative which tanked.  As senator, she has trimmed her sails to go along with the flow and done nothing risky or major.  Her actions as senator are poll-driven to win the nomination-experience is unnecessary for that.  She was experienced at managing coverups--be they "missing" Rose Law Firm documents or Monicagate--but you can see the results of that experience.
