Christmas Open Thread

Merry Christmas everyone. It's been snowing all night in Denver -- we've got 4 to 8 inches on tap by evening with treacherous driving conditions -- a good day to stay home and keep a fire going while Christmas dinner is in the oven. And, of course, check the blogs and news.

Here's a cheery Christmas video for you, Darlene Love on David Letterman, Christmas, Baby Please Come Home (hat tip to Dan at 5280.com.)

How's your day going so far?

Here at the outlet of the Chesapeake Bay the water is like a mirror; everything is closed even the Chinese restaurant. Enjoyed the Bruce Springsteen video posted below and the Darlene Love video posted by Digby the other great woman of the Netroots.

Happy for my Christian friends and enjoyed the Cardinal of the Palestinian giving his beautiful Arabic sermon. (Not familiar with the proper terminology and rank in the sentence.)

The dinner was prepared this morning and is a vegetarian extravaganza.

    Merry Xmas everybody!

I grew up wanting to be Darlene Love...I think she is the most under rated singer of that era...

Today I am going to see Hes not there at the movies with my daughter...

Hopefully we will a Chinese restaurant near by

The Bucket List and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead this week. The first was depressing with a bit of an uplifting bump and the second was really depressing but edgey and well acted.  At midnight last night the TL kid and I watched half of "Bad Santa" on tv, he thought it was hilarious, having seen it many times, I didn't like it at all.

He's looking forward to seeing Sweeney Todd and I am Legend and assures me I'd like neither.

    And guess what!!

Santa brought me my very own blog TallCotton
All I have to do now is learn how to all the technical stuff and actually proof read..

Our first Christmas was 1987... over the 24-26 we got like 36" in the foothills.... My mother law was visiting and loved watching it snow and then all the neighbors help each other dig out. She spent her last years with us in Denver and was a treat to have.

Anyway, if you are driving keep the Eggnog EGGnog and pray that the Broncos get an offense and a defense and a special teams...

made it home alive, from the sis-in-law's in bedford. oddly enough, in the 50's today, expected to be in the high 50's, low 60's this weekend. i love winter in va! my in-laws came up from myrtle beach, in the 70's there.

watched "a christmas story" last night, for the 5 billionth time. darren mcgavin still cracks me up! "you'll put your eye out!"

and the best present was new "crash bandicoot" game discs, that my wife found on e-bay, for my antique playstation I. my kids killed the originals, and they're really the only video games i ever liked.

jim, i'll have to come over, just to abuse you. :)

Santa was quite generous this year, and I hope he was likewise to you.

We watched a lot of Christmas Story - it's a particular favorite around our house.  "Mundane noodle!"  Back in the 70s - years prior to the movie - our family shared the pleasure of having read Jean Sheperd's books upon which it was based.  If you get a chance, you should too.  They are even funnier than the movie.

This a.m., listened to a lot of great music from German radio, courtesy of the internets.  If there's only one thing they do well (and they do a lot well), it's put together Christmas music that you can just put on and not worry about.  No repetition of the same 40 or so versions of "Jingle Bell Rock", "Blue Christmas" and so on that US radio provides you.  And no commercials.

And, I think "Bad Santa" is both hilarious and  poignant.

Jean Shepherd had a radio show at night that I used to listen to. What an incredible story-teller he was. Sometimes he read poems, I especially remember the Shooting of Dan Magrew (sp).

just imagine that in book form.

Somewhere, a few years back, I also recall someone had put out CDs of his old radio show.  I don't exactly recall where/who/when, but there's a project for you....

tv special "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"....hadn't seen it in years.  Meister Burger Burger Meister is a dead ringer for Rudy Guiliani!

"Kris Kringle, you are a non-comformist and a rebel"

Better than any gift I received was Christmas Dinner....sickest leg of lamb I ever had, and only 2.99 a lb at my butcher.  Domestic too, not that funny tasting New Zealand lamb.

his brother, Freeze Miser, going home to have their mom, Mother Nature, knock their heads together so Mrs. Claus can persuade Santa to saddle up and ride.

Actually more hilarious than just about any of the other "Christmas"-themed specials out there.

I was remarking to a sibling as we watched Heat Miser blow his top that "and they said that, on the internet, the providers of content would be king.  That this got made shows just how right, or stoned, they were."

FBI Building Biometric Database (none / 0) (#12)
by Aaron on Wed Dec 26, 2007 at 09:57:10 PM EST
FBI planning world's largest biometric database

[The FBI also intends to retain (upon employer request) the fingerprints of any employee who has undergone a criminal background check, and will inform the employer if the employee is ever arrested or charged with a crime.]

[The FBI's decision to implement this kind of tracking and identification system raises a number of concerns regarding citizen privacy , as well as serious questions about the accuracy of collected data.]

[At this point, the FBI's proposed biometric identification system contains no recourse for citizens who are misidentified, no formal method for the update and correction of biometric information, and no indication that citizens would even be allowed to view their own biometric profiles.]

[Even in the best of scenarios, it's unclear whether or not any national database of biometric information could be kept secure, updated, and available for citizen review. The FBI's past history and the agency's decision to remove itself from the requirements of the 1974 Privacy Act leave the current scenario far from ideal, and open the door for any number of misidentifications or abuses. ]
