Oscars Open Thread

If you're watching the Oscars, let us know what you think.

From the red carpet: Al Gore was funny -- saying his favorite singer was William Hung.

Nicole Kidman's dress is elegant but a miss (unusual for her) with one of those huge bows off one shoulder. Meryl Streep looks matronly once again.

I'm not a huge Celine Dion fan, but she looks great from the front. (From the side, it's not quite so great.) So does Gwynyth Paltrow, Rachel Weisz (changed my mind on them), Jada Pinkett, and Cate Blanchett.

Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon and Beyonce are stunning. I wasn't crazy about Penelope Cruz' dress or hairstyle -- way too severe and her ears stick out. The bottom half of her dress is all feathers.

Rinko Kikuchi from Babel looked so much more grown up and really pretty.

Best dressed guy so far: Leonardo di Caprio. Jack Nicholson has a shaved head. (Update: It's for a part he's now filming.)

I'll be live blogging on and off, please join in.

Updates below the fold:

First update: Ellen deGeneres was born for the host role. She's terrific. (amend that, she got a little tiresome after a while.) Best line (paraphrase): Jennifer Hudson was on American Idol and America didn't vote for her yet she's here nominated for an Oscar. And Al Gore, America voted for him and he's here. The crowd loved it.

Nicole Kidman's dress looks good from the front where you can hardly see that big bow.

DeGeneres over and over praised the diversity of the nominees -- it's so international and multi-cultural this year. I wonder if Tom Tancredo is throwing up.

Update 2: Best supporting actor: Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine.

The Al Gore segment was good. Melissa Etheridge sang her song from Inconvenient Truth. Leonardo diCaprio and Al Gore came out. Leo asked Al if had a major announcement to make. Just as he started to make one, the music came on signaling their time was up and off stage they went, laughing and patting each other on the back. (You can view it here.)

Update 3: William Monaghan and The Departed wins for best adapted screenplay.

Newsie at Daily Kos has a good fashion roundup.

Jennifer Hudson for best supporting actress in Dream Girls -- even though I wasn't swooned by Babel, I thought both nominees in that category, Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi were deserving of the award.

Update 4: Inconvenient Truth wins. Al Gore gets a standing ovation. Think Progress has the video.

Babel wins for best original score. Little Miss Sunshine beats Babel and The Queen for best original screenplay.

Update 5: Best musical segment -- Dream Girls and particularly Beyonce -- by miles. She was amazing.

Melissa Etheridge beats the three Dream Girls songs to win for her Inconvenient Truth song. [You Tube video here] She thanks her wife and Al Gore. She says it's not about being red or blue, it's about being green. Pretty big upset for Dream Girls.

Best editing: The Departed -- a woman editor.

Jodi Foster (with fabulous hair)is presenting the obits for those who died this year.

Helen Mirren wins Best Actress, no surprise there. She looks terrific by the way. So elegant.

Forest Whitaker wins Best Actor for the Last King of Scotland. Very heartfelt speech.

Update 6: Scorsese wins Best Director for The Departed. Finally. That man is so overdue. A standing ovation, "Could you double check the envelope?" Congrats, Marty.

Update 7: Best picture -- Diane Keaton rocks as a presenter, she's just the coolest and very sexy looking. She's presenting with a bald Jack Nicholson.

The Departed wins it. Excellent ending to a mostly boring show. Diane has her arm around Jack, Marty is looking on from the wings.

And that's a wrap.

I wonder if Tom Tancredo is throwing up.

    That's a good one.

And y'all, let's give it up for Morricone. Great move on the lifetime achievment award. Is it really possible that he never won an Oscar for all those awesome scores?

The most shocking thing about the Oscars this year was how scrawny most of the actresses looked.  I hope they fed them well afterwards.  And Penelope Cruz, so stunning usually, looked like a half-mummified ostrich.  I did like Gwyneth Paltrow's dress, which had an Art Deco feel to it, but wasn't crazy about the colour.  Helen Mirren looked fabulous - I like a woman who knows how to fill a dress!

Both the Best Actor and the Best Actress awards were well deserved this year.

I turned the TV off right after Hudson won.   Literally my wife and I said to eachother..."There's nothing worth staying up for."

I personaly didn't want to suffer through Al Gore's inevitable speach.

The show was too long.   They didn't give out any early oscars to keep you interested and why all the added extras (Will Ferrell, dance troop) that didn't have anything to do with the movies?

Ellen was fine but you barely saw her compared to all the montages and extra stuff going on.

Also the movies this year simply weren't that good so to me I didn't really care who won as I have in years pas.

I'm glad Scorsese won but for me it was more of a life time acheivement award becasue I didn't hink Departed was close to some of his previous films that he should have won for.  I mean anyone want to tell me Departed was 1/2 as good as Goodfellas?

Apparently I wasn't alone in this.  I think the Oscars should make it a real 3 hour show or get better movies next year.

Whitaker should've won for Bird years ago.

Great montage by Michael Mann, including my fave Kubrick moment in which Timothy Carey swats the cockroach and says "Now you've got the edge on him."
