In his weekly radio address, President Bush said:
Good morning. In times of war, Congress has no greater obligation than funding our war fighters. And next week, the House will begin debate on an emergency war spending bill.
The purpose of this legislation should be to give our troops on the front lines the resources, funds, and equipment they need to fight our enemies. Unfortunately, some in Congress are using this bill as an opportunity to micromanage our military commanders, force a precipitous withdrawal from Iraq, and spend billions on domestic projects that have nothing to do with the war on terror.
Precipituous withdrawal! 18 months from NOW is called precipitous by this incompetent fool who declared the mission accomplished in June 2003. He promises to veto the bill. Let's hope he does. Then Congress can pass a GOOD bill and remind Bush that Congress is a COEQUAL branch.
Senator Patty Murray's response to Bush says in plain terms:
This week, Democrats voted to give our troops the best chance to succeed in Iraq and to defeat Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. We voted to narrow the mission of U.S. forces in Iraq, and to begin the redeployment of our troops within the next four months. We voted for Iraqis to take responsibility for their country. Regrettably, our effort was blocked by Senate Republicans and a President who stubbornly refused to listen.
But we will not give up on this debate. Democrats will keep pushing in Congress until there is a change of course in Iraq. American lives, American security, and America's future are all on the line.
I applaud Senator Murray's statement and the actions of the Democrats in the United States Senate. House Democrats I criticize and condemn for their failure to fight to end the Iraq Debacle.
The Congress of the United States, controlled by Democrats, has the responsibility to fight for the policies it professes to believe in. The Congress of the United States has the responsibility to fulfill the mandate placed upon it by the American People in the 2006 elections.
End the Iraq Debacle as soon as possible.
