Sen. Domenici "Lawyers Up"

Last Night's Hardball with Chris Matthews debated the U.S. Attorney purge, and he had fired New Mexico U.S. Attorney David Iglesias (video; transcript will be here, when it is posted) explaining how he was shaken and stunned that a U.S. Senator would call him about whether charges would be filed against some Democratic office holders before last election day.  He was fired by AG Gonzalez less than six weeks later.

Before Iglesias came on the air, the three participants with Matthews said that Sen. Domenici should be subpoenaed as well, and one commented that "he has already lawyered up."

That was about the Judiciary Committee's subpoenas.

The Senate Ethics Committee should also consider whether Domenici's actions constituted inference in the justice system, not that they will do anything, but who knows?

This story rolls on. In today's NY Times, the U.S. Attorney in Michigan has come out questioning her firing and Subpoenas Force Talks for Testimony Deal.

Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) has nabbed Lee Blalack, best known as Duke Cunningham's lawyer, to represent him in the Senate ethics investigation, The Washington Post reports.

And they note the obvious irony:

Blalack, a partner in O'Melveny & Myers LLP's Washington office, is an experienced defense lawyer. As attorney for Cunningham, who is serving a sentence of more than eight years, Blalack dealt with one of the federal prosecutors who was later ousted, Carol S. Lam of San Diego.
