Impeach Alberto Gonzales

Here's yet another reason to impeach Alberto Gonzales (remember I speak for me only on this, not Talk Left); from Ralph Neas and People for the American Way:

Americans learned today that the F.B.I. has been abusing its authority under the Patriot Act to obtain private information about American citizens without judicial approval. So says a report issued today by the Department of Justice’s inspector general.

At issue are “national security letters”—an executive branch mechanism that was greatly expanded by the Patriot Act and essentially allows the government to circumvent the longstanding requirement that warrants be obtained before individuals’ private data, such as telephone records, bank statements, or Internet data can be examined without those individuals’ approval. According to the inspector general’s report, the F.B.I. has been obtaining national security letters inappropriately or even illegally and the result has been an unwarranted intrusion into Americans’ privacy.

“This scandalous abuse of power is exactly why we opposed the Patriot Act in the first place,” said Ralph G. Neas, president of People For the American Way, a national nonpartisan civil rights and liberties organization with more than one million members and activists. “Our nation’s founders made the judiciary an independent check on the executive branch of government for a reason. They knew that without checks and balances, it is far too easy for government officials to abuse their power to the detriment of our constitutional rights. That’s exactly what we’re seeing now. The Patriot Act undermines checks and balances, and this is the consequence.”

"This scandalous abuse of power is exactly why we opposed the Patriot Act in the first place,"

Wonder where he gets the nerve to abuse power so blatently?

Guess it does make sense to go after the low hanging fruit first as a warmup.

I was letting this roll around the back of my mind after reading this morning about Leahy and Specter leaning on Gonzo, and it occurred to me that maybe he isn't so different from a lot of people who have climbed a corporate ladder by attaching themself to a rising star, which Bush was for awhile in the eyes of many. And because their success has been due to a dependent relationship and not so much due to their own ability to navigate the politics of achievement on their own, they can get caught by it and before they realize they've gone too far they've done things that trap them. Leaving no choice but to continue or crash.

He's probably out of his element by now and doesn't know how to escape. He'll go down with the ship... if they don't toss him overboard to the circling sharks.

No sympathy here. He made his bed.

in the Bush administration needs to suffer an impeachment for several reasons; the overwhelming evidence from investigations, Congressional Democrats asserting that the Rule of Law means holding individuals in the Bush cabal/administration accountable to The Constitution, as an available remedy to demonstrate to the public that there are certain bad acts and actors that warrant extreme measures.

Gonzales exemplifies all of those and he would be my first choice.  Oh yeah BTD, you speak for me on seeking that impeachment.

    For these guys, no doubt.

A videotape showing Pentagon officials' final interrogation of al-Qaida suspect Jose Padilla is missing, raising questions about whether federal prosecutors have lost other recordings and evidence in the case.

    snip

Prosecutors and the Pentagon have said they cannot find the tape despite an intensive search.

All this talk has about as much use as picking your nose during a house fire!  The die is cast now and nothing short of an all out revolution will not save us now.  That will never happen either because Mr. America still has his SUV and color TV. That Bush can do anything he wants is a clear sign that all under his command can do likewise.  What good did the election of all those Democrats do?  Go pick your nose!
