Imus Fired By CBS

I am seeing this announced on TV. Reporting by AP. More in a moment.

AP:

CBS announced Thursday that it has fired Don Imus from his radio program, following a week of uproar over the radio host's racist comments about the Rutgers women's basketball team. "There has been much discussion of the effect language like this has on our young people, particularly young women of color trying to make their way in this society," CBS President and Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves said in announcing the decision. "That consideration has weighed most heavily on our minds as we made our decision."

Quick thoughts. This was a business decision for CBS and NBC's prior move put CBS on the spot. Let's face it, while this last outrage from Imus was especially appalling, his track record was plenty for deciding to get rid of him.

Heavenly days!  I thought Imus would get off with a mere rap on his knuckles.  May he not have another opportunity to inflict verbal abuse on anyone.

Let the re-education camps begin construction. I wonder if Haliburton will get the contract...

Don Imus' bigotry was the finger in the dike of freedom. Let his death not be in vain.

After all, McCain said he was a "believer in redemption" where Imus was concerned.

After all, the ugly lessons of Katrina are ancient history, as Imus, McCain and so many Americans seem to believe.

While the firing of Don Imus left these networks no choice since they need to be politicaly correct,I would like to see the leaders in the black comunity to ask for the firings of all black comedians and rap performers who are the parents of these very words that Imus uttered.I know as do every one that black people use the "'N "' word against each other all the time and black men call their women WHOES all the time. You can bet your bottom dollar that Richard Pryor and all the black comedians would be broke if they were held accountable for their language.

Please, if you know nothing about the great comic genius that he was, about his trip to Africa, about his renunciation of the n word, then don;t talk about him.

    Bad comment.

My point was!!People can find it completely palatable when black comedians and rap performers to youse demeaning words about their own race then why do they re-act so wehemently to a person who happens to be Anglo-Saxon??I think Don Imus was wrong but so are the stand up comics and rap artists.

There is no dispute about the comic genius that he was.Given the fact that he almost self-distructed himself on one occasion and that he was a heavy user of coccain and an abuser of his wife,I dont hold him in the top 10 of the most esteemed and respected.

I know as do every one that black people use the "'N "' word against each other all the time and black men call their women WHOES all the time
And GED courses that can help with basic sentence construction.

Let the reaction to the action begin. It's not going to be pretty...

And by the way...if you like this firing you must love how big stores refuse to sell "objectionable" movies and CD's.

Well, maybe Steve Pagones will be the next person to be apologized to.

Now, if only someone on the left would call out Al Sharpton over the Tawana Brawley incident - something that was a complete fake, and for which he has never apologized.  I have no problem with Imus being gone, but it would be nice to see some other well known jerks taken down a few pegs as well

    You are right (5.00 / 3) (#18)
by Warren Terrer on Thu Apr 12, 2007 at 05:14:27 PM EST
Al Sharpton should bare his share of the responsibility for Don Imus's short-comings.

Bless you for having the courage to make this equivalency between two completely unrelated events.

Employing someone who holds bigoted, and as some, or many would hold, hateful views, firing them for financial reasons, and then claiming it was for the very views you employed them for, or the views of the bigot?

Money trumped intellectual honesty in this case, and in my opinion the bigot and his employers are both wrong, but at least the bigot was not afraid to be honest.

    Imus (none / 0) (#25)
by wnewb on Thu Apr 12, 2007 at 09:04:43 PM EST
If CBS Pres/CEO Moonves was so appalled by Imus' comments, why did he wait so long to take action? He pretends to stand on a moral pedestal yet the truth is the decision to can Imus came only after heavy-hitter advertisers bailed on MSNBC yesterday. The firing of Imus was purely a financial matter for CBS.

I've never listened to Imus, so personally I'm unconcerned about his dismissal. My real concern is the ability of corporate America (advertisers) to censor a radio personality so quickly and completely. Was the corporate reaction based on actual, overwhelming public feedback or was it a knee-jerk reaction based on fear?

Corporate America took forever but acted quickly (none / 0) (#26)

Give the CEO a chance to get back from the golf course and the other whiskey-soaked clubmen.

Your post seems inconsistent: first you fault CBS for waiting so long to take action. Then you about face and express a real concern that corporate America could "censor a radio personality so quickly and completely."
