GonzoGate and the USA for Wisconsin

The plot thickens:

We have also been advised that there may be RNC e-mail traffic relating to Republican Party concerns about the United States Attorney in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, prior to his announcing, on the eve of the hotly contested 2006 gubernatorial election, that he was indicting an official in the incumbent Democratic governor's administration.

TPM is killing on this story. Can a blog get a Pulitzer?

    so much so, i thought
    i'd give it a try. . .

and -- no shock here -- it
    is far, far tougher
than one might think. . .

    i put this together two
hours ago, and it is already
    slightly behind the breaking-
    curve-ball that is this story
    . . .

    tpm is a national treasure
on this -- and many other -- stories.

Public  service, breaking news, investigative reporting, explanatory reporting, beat reporting, national reporting, commentary, drama... I'd say TPM deserve at least one of those!  I'd hasten to add a few other bloggers in some of those categories, as well.

an article published solely on line and not in the actual newspaper qualifies for a Pulitzer nomination.  No answer as to whether there must be an actual newspaper though.

But former state Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager, whose office took part in the investigation of the travel contract, has told the news media that Biskupic's prosecution was not politically motivated.

"In an average case that would involve ordinary people, where it wasn't the governor of one party and a U.S. attorney of another party, you would have seen a much less cautious prosecution," Lautenschlager told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Monday.

Although a Democrat like Doyle, Lautenschlager frequently battled with the governor during her term.

    Origin of the Doyle/Lautenschlager fued (none / 0) (#16)
by Ben Masel on Fri Apr 13, 2007 at 01:10:50 AM EST
The Doyle/Lautenschlager fued began when the story of Wisconsin's involvement in Jeb Bush's Matrix datamining program surfaced. This was the replacement for the Pentagon's Total Information awareness which was 'killed' by the congress, so the Busheviks moved it to a multiState operation, managed by a private firm with close ties to Jeb.

When Peg became AG, none of the Doyle holdovers in the AG's office briefed her on the contract Doyle had signed with Florida and Seisint.

It was only when the Utah Governor resigned to take Tommy's spot at HHS, and the new Utah governor pulled out of the Matrix, and mentioned to the Utah press the other States in the program that Peg learned of our sharing personal records with Matrix. I was working on a story on the MATRIX for the Wisconsonite, a defunct hardcopy, Peg gave me the scoop on the Doyle role.

Neither you, nor I, have seen whatever convinced the Grand jury there was probable cause.

Biskupic's longer-term track record does not show partisan. Career prosecutor in the USA's office. Approved by Feingold and Kohl for the job.

He's concvicted a Republican Mayor and the Walworth County GOP chair.

It may well turn out he caved to partisan motivated pressure from Washington in this case, but my instincts suggest this is the wrong tree to be looking.

I'm not arguing with the acquittal, but not all failed prosecutions are politically motivated.

This one may well turn out to have been, but I'm seeing a rush to judgement, based on circumstantial evidence as thin as that used to convict Ms Thompson.

I supported Lautenschlager's re-election bid against a Primary challenger put up by Doyle (who won the Primary and lost the General.) Contributed $20.06, and signed her nomination papers.

Peg, at the State convention, declined to sign my papers, but introduced me to her son and husband, each of whom signed and donated a dollar to my campaign.

TPM has long provided incredible analysis and investigations. Their journalism is more trustworthy than any TV and even the major rags.

Their work has put MSM to shame and got many stories started.

    Pulitzer indeed. Maybe several.
