The Right To Choose: Rudy Was Against It Before He Was For It Before He Was Against It

Rudy Giuliani was never a man of principle on any issue but, on the issue of the right to choose, he is laughably contortionist, depending upon what office he is running for. Much is being discussed about his recent flip flop, (previously he criticized Pope John Paul II on the issue) but little is discussed about his initial flip flop in 1989 when he first sought the Mayoralty of NYC:

[A]ccording to a February 22, 1989, Newsday article, leaders of New York's Conservative Party said Giuliani -- then a candidate for mayor of New York City -- "assured them he was personally opposed to abortion, did not favor government funding or criminal penalties, did favor an exemption in cases of rape or incest, and was in favor of overturning the U.S. Supreme Court's decision legalizing abortion, Roe v. Wade." But following the U.S. Supreme Court's July 1989 decision in Webster v. Reproductive Health Services, Giuliani reportedly shifted his position to one favoring abortion rights.

So when he now flips again because he is running for a different political office, the Presidency this time, it is simply what one would expect from such an unprincipled man. One flop on choice we can call political expediency or "personal growth" - but another motivated by political ambition? What can one say about such a person? Simply this, he'll say anything to get elected.

    I'm getting scattered bits of (none / 0) (#1)

info since I'm travelling (and won't be able to respond) BUT I can't find any elaboration.  The NYTimes attributes just one phrase to him  - and, sadly, doesn't make the exact conflict explicit.

So it will be interesting to see how flip-flopping sells.  Maybe his 'standing firm' on 9/11 will give him cover.

looks like his children are fed up with his flip-flopping on wives, so to speak.

Bush was considered a moron and he was elected twice.  So, seems like Rudy has lots of leeway to flip flop away and still remain a serious threat.

McCain doesn't have a reputation for flip-flopping, despite what people here think.  He's sticking to his guns on the war no matter what.  George W. Bush sure doesn't change his mind based on the polls (or anything else).  The two people in this campaign who are most clearly flip-floppers who will say anything to get elected are Giuliani and H. Clinton.  I'm not sure if Edwards has turned more liberal since he left the Senate and saw that his route to the White House would have to be to run to the left of Clinton.

    McCain not a Flip-Flopper? (none / 0) (#4)

That's funny. I recall seeing McCain's lips plastered all over Jerry Falwell's posterior a few months ago at Falwell's University. McCain also so tenderly hugged President Bush who trashed McCain's reputation back in 2000. Pandering to Falwell followers after McCain's own statements in 2000 towards them really appears to be a 180 in my book.
