Sen. Ken Salazar Calls for Gonzales to Resign

Colorado Senator Ken Salazar has joined the roster of Senators urging Alberto Gonzales to resign.

Salazar, D-Denver, has long been considered one of Gonzales' few Democratic allies in Congress, and until today he had declined to join many fellow Democrats and handful of Republicans who have been calling for Gonzales to step down in the wake of a controversy over the firing of federal prosecutors last year.

In a press conference in Denver, Salazar said he has become concerned about a "politicization" of the Department of Justice. He said he spoke to Gonzales and urged him to resign, saying it was "time for the Department of Justice to get a fresh start."

Salazar is hardly a liberal Democrat. He's not only centrist, but a well known compromiser who values bi-partisanship.

I'm beginning to think Gonzales may actually resign. If it wasn't likely, I don't think Salazar would have taken a lead role in this.

Then again, perhaps Salazar, formerly the Attorney General of Colorado, just feels particularly strongly about the job.

I don't usually pay much attention to the graphics on TL but the picture of Gonzales as a piece of toast was pretty funny.  Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.

Alberto is staying as long as he doesn't rock Bush's boat.

Impeachment or nothing.  A vote of no confidence will not do it.

    If he resigns ... (none / 0) (#3)

If Gonzales is asked to resign, mind you, it will be for doing exactly what Bush wants from him. That isn't strong grounds for termination. Gonzales should be impeached forthwith.

Salazar is a Demo, so let's not act like it is front page news for him to help out the party.

If the Demos thought they could impeach Gonzales they would try in a heart beat.

I haven't the slightest idea what you are talking about.

My comment was that if the Demos could impeach Gonzales they would.

    That they haven't speaks volumes.

"When Salazar took office in January 2005, one of his first official acts was to endorse Gonzales and introduce him at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. That move angered some Democrats, who said it blunted their questioning of Gonzales over his role in crafting the Bush Administration's policies related to torture and other issues."
