Cheney's Commencement Address at West Point

The White House has released the transcript of Dick Cheney's commencement address yesterday at West Point.

Scarecrow at Firedoglake takes issue with his statements.

BarbinMd at Daily Kos recaps and interprets Cheney's statements on how we are winning the war on terror:

Our government has used every legitimate tool to counter the activities of an enemy that likely has cells inside our own country. We've improved our security arrangements [dug a deeper bunker for me], reorganized intelligence capabilities [repeatedly broke the law], surveilled and interrogated the enemy [tortured], and worked closely with friends [Great Britain] and allies [Great Britain] to track terrorist movements.

    My favorite part of Cheney's speech (5.00 / 1) (#1)

was the protestors outside West Point who got some face time on CNN though it was small.  The speaking protestor talked about how this administration always shows up for West Point commencement so they can use and abuse grads as a nice prop for their evilness.

    . . .but, don't you think it is a
    first amendment issue?  i mean,
    no one should abuse the grads;
the issue is cheney -- and the
lies that put these cadets (now
    officers) in harm's way. . .

    no one disrespects the troops
    by critizing the vice-president.
[that guy who's really in charge(!)]

asking the leadership to take responsibility
for their decisions is what the protests are
all about -- no one blames the cadets.

i do think it odd that the vice-
president is so insecure about the
logic and moral authority of his con-
victions, that he needs to invoke
the aid of the courts to insulate
himself from the natural consequences of
    his stated positions, and decisions.

by that, i mean, he applied for, and
    received, a "prior restraint" order,
keeping almost all of the protestors
far, far away from where he appeared.

the fact that c.n.n. covered the protest
was simply balanced reporting. and that is
what amendment, first, is all about.

i am sorry that we disagree about that.

for my money, the most unfortunate part
of cheney's speech was his sneer at the
    geneva conventions
-- and on the link, i
offer some some as to why that bothered me.

    c h e e r s!

my screen name they believe that I have a rightish slant.....I don't.  I'm a liberal and a feminist who married a damned soldier.  There aren't a whole big bunch of us, but a few and because my worries and issue concerned military things when I first began my internet journey into political debate I just linked my first name with my ISSUES.  It is kind of cool though now because obviously the right doesn't own everything military including using the word military as an adjective!  I don't think that protestors get enough face time on the tube.  I went to Crawford to stand with Cindy Sheehan.  The day I got there there was about 40 of us but it grew steadily and we all slept in tents and cars and on the floors of Peace House for days.  The counterprostestors showed up in an air conditioned bus and stood in the ditch and sang songs for half an hour and then left and they got enormous friggin playtime for that.  Made me sick because there was nothing fair and balanced by showing up to shoot the counter protestors and then airing it and not telling everyone that they left as soon as the cameras stopped rolling.

    Actually. no.

The First doesn't require balanced reporting.

If it did, about 99% of the blogs on the internet and 99.9% of the editorial pages would be in line for drastic changes.

And it is too bad that you don't even understand the issues when it comes to the military.

    DesMoinesRegister

Hello media, do you know you indirectly kill American soldiers every day? You inspire and report the enemy's objective every day. You are the enemy's greatest weapon. The enemy cannot beat us on the battlefield so all he does is try to wreak enough havoc and have you report it every day. With you and the enemy using each other, you continually break the will of the American public and American government.

So daily we put a whoopin on the enemy, but all the enemy has to do is turn on the TV and get re-inspired. He gets to see his daily roadside bomb, truck bomb, suicide bomber or mortar attack. He doesn't see any accomplishments of the U.S. military (FOX, you're not exempt, you suck also).

Media, we know you hate the George Bush administration, but report both sides, not just your one-sided agenda. You have got to realize how you are continually motivating every extremist, jihadist and terrorist to continue their resolve to kill American soldiers."

    Why did he write it?

"I am just tired of busting my butt over here and coming home every night and turning on the TV (Armed Forces Network) and hearing how we are failing miserably," he told me in an e-mail.

You may agree with what Funk has to say. You may not.

Many in my business certainly won't. But Funk is a soldier, fighting a war, who has earned the right to be heard

ppj, this thread is about cheney's commencement address, you have plenty of other threads to troll on and make personal attacks on.

One thing to note about cheney's address is that he continues to equate iraq and 9/11:

America is fighting this enemy in Iraq because that is where they have gathered. We are there because, after 9/11, we decided to deny terrorists any safe haven.
Talk about the cart before the horse. AQ wasn't in iraq before we invaded. AQ had been rejected by iraq before we invaded. They now have a safe haven in iraq because bush invited them with his swaggering 'bring it on' screech.

cheney is and always has been a liar, from WMDs north of tikrit to 9/11=iraq to last throes.

No.  You have USS because you do not understand simple concepts no matter how many times they are explained to you, and this question is just the latest of many examples.

The only explanation that makes sense to me is that you are paid not to understand them, but if that is not correct, feel free to tell us why you do not understand concepts that everyone else here has no problem with.

    Do you do that often??

Point out your inability to connect dots?  No more often than everyone else you "communicate" with.
