Jury Chosen in Jose Padilla Trial

Seven men and five women have been selected as jurors in the trial of accused enemy combatent and "dirty bomber" Jose Padilla. Opening arguments begin Monday. The trial could last all summer.

There is no "dirty bomber" charge against Padilla.

Instead, Mr. Padilla and his co-defendants, Adham Hassoun and Kifah Jayyousi, stand accused of participating in a “North American support cell” that, the government says, sent money, goods and recruits abroad to assist “global jihad.”

The prosecution and defense attacked each other's juror exclusions:

Prosecutors complained Monday that the defense was trying to exclude from the jury white and Hispanic men, who are considered more likely to convict, while defense lawyers accused the government of trying to exclude blacks, who studies have shown frequently view criminal prosecutions with greater skepticism. In the end, five blacks, four whites and three Hispanics were seated, along with an alternate panel of five Hispanics and one woman who said she was born in Egypt.

No muslims are on the jury. The woman born in Egypt said she is not a practicing Muslim.

As to occupations:

On the panel are an executive in a software firm, a makeup artist, and the manager of several gas stations.

Disclosure: One of TalkLeft's pals, William Swor, is defending co-defendant Kifah Jayyousi. I also hear that the Judge, Marcia Cooke, is very fair.
