Dick Cheney Issues Statement on Scooter Libby

As a follow-up to Big Tent Democrat's earlier post on Cheney and Libby, this statement now appears on the White House website:

Scooter has dedicated much of his life to public service at the State Department, the Department of Defense and the White House. In each of these assignments he has served the nation tirelessly and with great distinction. I relied on him heavily in my capacity as Secretary of Defense and as Vice President. I have always considered him to be a man of the highest intellect, judgment and personal integrity-a man fully committed to protecting the vital security interests of the United States and its citizens.

Scooter is also a friend, and on a personal level Lynne and I remain deeply saddened by this tragedy and its effect on his wife, Harriet, and their young children. The defense has indicated it plans to appeal the conviction in the case. Speaking as friends, we hope that our system will return a final result consistent with what we know of this fine man.

A tragedy? I like the way he says "our system" rather than "the judicial system" or the "appellate courts." Can you spell p-a-r-d-o-n?

Cheney, the ultimate supporter of the unitary executive system.

Another curious thing Cheney said (none / 0) (#1)

Cheney says that Libby has the "highest personal integrity".  What about Libby's PROFESSIONAL integrity?  No comment about it from Mr. Cheney.

Wonder how long it took them (none / 0) (#2)

to create that masterpiece of doublespeak.

committed to protecting the vital security interests of the United States and its citizens.

Dick Cheney = one of the nations' vital security interests.

    cheney's rules -- #1, and #2! (none / 0) (#3)

over at EW place this took place:

[rainnn], I think the key is that Cheney has a different theory of justice than you. Consider this. Yesterday Omar Khadr and Salim Hamdan had their charges dismissed after about five years detainment at Guantanamo Bay. I searched in vain to find a Cheney word of sympathy about the inconvenience to their familes. But I did find this from the BBC from two years ago:

Mr Cheney says that those prisoners who remain [in Guantanamo] are "bad people" and "hardcore".

So, comparing what Cheney said about Libby and the Guantanamo detainees, Cheney's theory of justice appears to be good guys, even if they are guilty, should NOT be inconvenienced by going to prison, but bad guys, even if they are innocent, should rot there. . .

    and my answer, this morning:

    thanks steve, i think
    that is entirely correct.

if we call yours "cheney's rule #1", then. . .

it is only one-half of his whole,
but secreted, theory -- the second half
easily referred to as cheney's rule #2:

    "in situations otherwise covered
by cheney rule #1, EVERYONE should
go to prison to protect ME -- the best,
of the very best, of the good guys. . ."

    707!

the "public service" and "serving the nation" bits.  Gimme a break, these clowns only serve themselves and their homies.
