The New York Times has a very nice and long profile of Elizabeth Edwards today. I hope I get to meet her at some point during the campaign. Her heart and her politics are in the right place.

As for John Edwards, as I wrote here, he's coming around on mandatory minimum sentences and the crack-powder cocaine disparity (as is Hillary), and here's what he said on Iraq and Guantanamo at a Tampa fundraiser this weekend:

Most important, he said, is ending the war in Iraq. "This is not politics, " he said. "This is about life and death."

Edwards said if elected he would close Guantanamo Bay detention camp on his first day in office and make it clear the United States does not condone torture. He also pledged to stop "illegal spying" on Americans and push for an end to the violence in Darfur.

It's also refreshing to see he held a $15 fundraiser. It brought out 500 people. Edwards has been very gracious in making himself available to others than fatcats and even to bloggers.

Was at my firm's offices for a fundraising event just days after she and John Edwards announced that her cancer was back. She was incredible. A great advocate for her husband, of course, but an absolutely amazing person in her own right. She's an independent thinker, that's for sure, and has given a great deal of careful thought to a lot of issues. I was totally blown away by her.

to multiply to be POTUS. You don't even have to have a firm grasp of our mother tongue. You're still in the running.

I was child. We lost my mom and brother and sister in an accident when I was at school. The Edwards family has always fascinated me because they have dealt with a very real tragedy in their lives. One night before my grandmother passed away we stayed awake talking about how losing my mom had affected us both. I told her about how I had to find different women for role models and how sad I was one day when I became self aware enough to know that I was doing it and had always had to reach out to older women to mentor me. I was still in such a growing place full of possibilities though and vast choices. When my grandmother had her turn telling me how it was for her I will never forget her voice, her eyes, her hands. She said that she was a parent and she was supposed to out live her children and then one day her first born child who was also a woman just as she was died and her life had been upside down since. She said nothing ever felt "normal" again. I admire John and Elizabeth for how one must fearlessly walk forward and challenge yourself to grow after having lost something as profound as a child, and growing enough to be able to lead after surviving such a trauma amazes me because I know how hard the road they have traveled is. Not for the weak minded or the weak hearted.

Edwards' position on mandatory minimums isn't a new one. He's held that position since at least 2004:
