Bush Issues New Immigration Regs, Felony Charges to Increase

Our unitary executive is at it again. Even though Congress refused to pass comprehensive immigration reform, he's taken it upon himself to issue new regulations that will crack down on immigrants, toughen border enforcement and increase the use of felony charges against those in violation.

At a news conference in Washington yesterday, Michael Chertoff, the secretary of homeland security, and Carlos M. Gutierrez, the secretary of commerce, formally unveiled the measures, which had been disclosed in general terms earlier, to reinforce border security and drive illegal immigrants out of the labor force.

....Mr. Chertoff said the “real hammer” would be more frequent use by the immigration authorities of criminal felony charges against employers and illegal immigrant workers. He said the authorities had made 742 criminal arrests so far this year in illegal employment cases, compared with 716 such arrests in all of last year, which was a record.

If you had any doubt this is a payback, consider this:

Mr. Chertoff suggested that employers should focus their ire on Congress for failing to pass the broader immigration measure. “We can be very sure that we let Congress understand the consequences of the choices that Congress makes,” he said.

    Good for legal workers (5.00 / 1) (#5)

When did the commission of identity fraud become a progressive virtue rather than a crime?

Progressives should be in the vanguard of the fight against identity fraud, regardless of whether it involves using someone else's social security number to obtain a job or for financial gain.

Allowing employers to hire illegal labor not only places these workers at great risk for exploitation, it dispossess legal workers of the opportunity for equitable employment, decent pay, and a chance to fulfill their goals and dreams.

The consequences of this fraudulent game impacts other lives as well, like that of Camber Lybbert, who "thought it was a mistake when her bank told her that her daughter's Social Security number was on its files for two credit cards and two auto loans, with an outstanding balance of more than $25,000. Her daughter is 3 years old."

The New York Times piece continues: "For Ms. Lybbert and her husband, Tyson, the call was the beginning of a five-month scramble trying to clear up their daughter's credit history. As it turned out, an illegal immigrant named Jose Tinoco was using their daughter's stolen Social Security number, not in pursuit of a financial crime, but to get a job."

While I am skeptical of this administration's motives for this new crackdown effort, they are nonetheless doing what the federal government should have been doing for years: enforcing the laws on the books to protect the interests of legal workers.

It's the "progressives" who are rushing to do Mexico's bidding, some of whom have indirect links to that government.

"Progressive" AntonioVillaraigosa congratulated Mexico's president on helping to block 187. He's, of course, a Democrat. He's also a Clinton co-chair.

"Progressive" Barack Obama marched for illegal immigration in a parade organized by those linked to the MexicanGovernment and MexicanPoliticalParties.

"Progressive" HildaSolis stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Mexican politicians in DC, demanding "reform".

I don't remember saying I loved anyone. Is that a requirement in your world? One must love a particular nationality?? Well, it isn't in mine.

In my world people are judged on what they do, not their nationality, religion, class or race.

I find your position to be distinctly unliberal. In fact, downright fascist:

a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

And yes, people can be described as illegal aliens, just as they can be described as football players, criminals, race car drivers, reporters and ROF's....among other things..

But I give an E for effort in quoting the standard talking points of the Open Borders crowd.

So, thanks for proving that you are still a smearer:

With Rovian fantasies. And your white supremecist position (Jacksonian via Hiram Evans) is not racist because rather than attacking a racial group (white christians) you are championing them.

The backlash against "alien" groups "infesting" American life after World War I assumed its most virulent form in a revival of the Ku Klux Klan....

.....These are, in the first place, a blend of various peoples of the so-called Nordic race, the race which, with all its faults, has given the world almost the whole of modern civilization. The Klan does not try to represent any people but these. . . ..

I have never quoted, or read, Evans. Based on your desire to look at people as separate groups though, it is apparent that you are very familar with him.

The only comment I ever made that had Evans in it is the following, which shows how dumb and mistaken Evans was when he underestimated the strength of the  American Dream..

    Here it is again.

As Hiram W. Evans, the surprisingly articulate Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, wrote in 1926, the old stock American of his time had become

"a stranger in large parts of the land his fathers gave him. Moreover, he is a most unwelcome stranger, one much spit upon, and one to whom even the right to have his own opinions and to work for his own interests is now denied with jeers and revilings. `We must Americanize the Americans,' a distinguished immigrant said recently."

Most progressive, right thinking intellectuals in mid-century America believed that the future of American populism lay in a social democratic movement based on urban immigrants. Social activists like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger consciously sought to use cultural forms like folk songs to ease the transition from the old individualistic folk world to the collective new one that they believed was the wave of the future; they celebrated unions and other strange, European ideas in down home country twangs so that, in the bitter words of Hiram Evans, "There is a steady flood of alien ideas being spread over the country, always carefully disguised as American."

But then lo and hehold! The KKK leader was proven wrong as Meade notes:

What came next surprised almost everyone. The tables turned, and Evans' Americans "americanized" the immigrants rather than the other way around. In what is still a largely unheralded triumph of the melting pot, Northern immigrants gradually assimilated the values of Jacksonian individualism. Each generation of new Americans was less "social" and more individualistic than the preceding one. American Catholics, once among the world's most orthodox, remained Catholic in religious allegiance but were increasingly individualistic in terms of psychology and behavior ("I respect the Pope, but I have to follow my own conscience"). Ties to the countries of emigration steadily weakened, and the tendency to marry outside the group strengthened.

That's my world, squeaky. You can go march and protest about individuals and individual rights. I won't.

I have never quoted, or read, Evans.

Whoever it is you have been reading, including Mead, has read Evans, because you may as well have been quoting him.

Again a quote very much like your drivel:

These are, in the first place, a blend of various peoples of the so-called Nordic race, the race which, with all its faults, has given the world almost the whole of modern civilization.

The backlash against "alien" groups "infesting" American life after World War I assumed its most virulent form in a revival of the Ku Klux Klan....

Quit parsing. I quoted Mead. Who quoted Evans ro show how wrong Evans was.  Vast difference.

And if you don't want to be thought of as an Evans fan, quit trying to project his nasties on someone else.

And yes. If we don't get control of the situation our country will be over run by illegal aliens.

You may take that to the bank.

Why you think opposition to that is bad, I can't really say. But it does match your Open Borders position.

Our culture is certainly superior to the radical Moslem culture that allows honor killings of female family members, hanging of rape victims for causing their rape, hanging of homosexuals, denying women education, threatening to destroy Israel, and best of all, just to spell it out so amost any dummy can understand, OBL himself saying:

So, the driving-away jihad against the US does not stop with its withdrawal from the Arabian peninsula, but rather it must desist from aggressive intervention against Muslims in the whole world.
