Suicide Attacks Kill Over 175 In Iraq

Link:

Four suicide bombers hit a Kurdish Yazidi community in northwest Iraq on Tuesday, killing at least 175 people and wounding 200 others, the Iraqi military said.

The bombs tore through communities near Qahataniya, 75 miles west of Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city, according to Iraq Army Capt. Mohammed Ahmed and Abdul-Rahman al-Shimiri, the top government official in the area.

The attack was the deadliest in Iraq since 215 people were killed Nov. 23 when mortar rounds and five car bombs devastated a Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City. Dhakil Qassim, mayor of Sinjar, a town near where the attacks occurred, said al-Qaida in Iraq was behind the attack, citing what he said were Kurdish government intelligence reports.

In addition, 5 US soldiers killed. Iraq Energy Ministry officials abducted.

This is a couple of hours old, but the best I can find right now:

Three suicide truck bombers targeted members of an ancient religious sect in northwestern Iraq on Tuesday, killing at least 20 people, while the crash of an American transport helicopter near an air base in Anbar killed five U.S. servicemembers.

Four more U.S. soldiers were reported killed in separate attacks — three in an explosion near their vehicle Monday in the northwestern Ninevah province and another who was died of wounds from combat in western Baghdad. In a separate attack, a fourth suicide truck bomber struck a strategic bridge on the main highway linking Baghdad with the northern city of Mosul, killing at least 10, police said. The span was bombed three months ago and only one lane had reopened, according to the police officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

The attack was in an area populated by Yazidis (5.00 / 1) (#4)

If you recall, this was the group that stoned that young woman to death and the video was seen around the world... recorded by men standing right next to her... recording her death with their cell phones.

In other ongoing chaos in Iraq: a bridge connecting Mosel with Baghdad was destroyed.  100 men in Iraqi Army uniforms kidnapped several senior Iraqi Oil Ministry officials. One was al-Wagaa, a Sunni from Baiji where Iraq's oil refining is concentrated. But, two of kidnapped were Shiites, so this wasn't sectarian. And, the official lunch that Talibani's aide said was an "icebreaker" was "only an invitation to lunch" and no negotiations were discussed according to a leader of the largest Sunni bloc.

just so people won't notice how wonderful Al Anbar province is and how much we are winning.  You cynic ;)  You have no patience, you are short on virtues ;)  That's okay though because so are military wives with children, sort of short on sanity too.  For punishment we will probably be docked on our flag ration.

CNN is now reporting 500+ dead Iraqis in these bombings.

The deadliest day in Iraq since the invasion.

    Obviously the surge is working.

that there is a more peaceful atmosphere in Al Anbar and that fact will be used to promote militarily staying in Iraq or that chaos and genocide have been unleashed in the North and that fact will be used to promote militarily staying in Iraq ;(  And no REAL SOLUTIONS IN SIGHT AS WELL AS NO END IN SIGHT while people with guns once again for the umpteenth world history failing time have a goal of using that force to create an environment where a gun isn't needed.

or maybe 'they' are just gender confused!? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Do you have a comment on the topic or just personal attacks on BTD?

p.s. 175+ iraqis died today. 9+ American soldiers died in the last 2 days.

I think that's wrong. What do you think?

just commenting on the state of the blogs these days.

just think it is telling that btd gets no dialogue on Iraq today, here, and overall, the blogs are glued to themselves this week. all wanting to nurse on the yk2 teat, etc.

i suspect btd understands where my comment is coming from. which would be exactly the opposite of your suspicions.

Believe me, when she attacks me personally, a frequent occurrence, she is pretty clear about it.
