Is Dick Durbin Supporting Obama?

The Chicago Tribune has an interview with Illinois Senator Dick Durbin. It sounds like he's supporting Barack Obama:

If it's a national poll, Hillary Clinton will always run ahead of Barack Obama. Even though we [Illinoisans] know Barack personally, and his kids' names and everything, only 60 percent of Americans do. Now go to the states where they're working and you'll find that the polling is much closer between the two of them and Barack at this point is either tied or ahead in most of these states.

So I feel good about it. I would say at this point that he still has that magic. He is bringing the fortysomethings in as John Kennedy did in '60. It's not just the volunteers and the voters, but it's a lot of business people and community leaders who are in that age range [and] who think it's their turn. And that's good for us.

Durbin was out here in Iowa with Obama on announcement day in February, and also visit Iowa City as an Obama surrogate in March.

sen. durban putting in his coffee? there are no polls, anywhere (except, perhaps, in sen. obama's own house), that show sen. obama close or tied with sen. clinton. that is purely wishful thinking on sen. durban's part.

for the sake of discussion, lets assume this to be the case, that there are a couple of local polls showing sen. obama close, tied, or even marginally ahead of sen. clinton. so what? last time i checked, the presidential election is national, not statewide or local.

kennedy had more going for him, in terms of political clout, than merely charm and good looks. he had daddy, and daddy's contacts. in addition, he was a war hero, etc., etc. , etc.

even with that entire network going for him, he only just barely beat nixon.

sen. obama has none of that, and he frankly lacks kennedy's innate charm and way with words. given time and seasoning, perhaps so. but right now sen. durban is deluding himself if he truly thinks sen. obama is bridging the gap.

referring to Iowa. Some polls have had Obama tied or ahead of Hillary there. And there was an ARG poll from August that showed Obama tied with Hillary in New Hampshire. It turned out to be an outlier, though. There've also been a couple polls showing Obama and Hillary within the moe of each other in South Carolina. This is cherry-picking, I know, but all told his statements aren't completely baseless. BTW, it's a simple fact-beyond debate-that presidential primaries are local and statewide affairs. To my knowledge there's never been a candidate that won all the early states who wasn't nominated.

that's what i get for doing something in the wee hours of the morning, or maybe it was just my freudian slip showing. in either event, it obviously should have been "sen. durbin", not durban.

my apologies to the good sen.

in my defense, at least i was consistent! lol

if Durban was NOT supporting Obama.  I'm sure the entire Illinois machine is behind Obama either overtly or covertly.
