Heh

A TPM Reader cracks wise:

Reading about Mitt's claim that his five sons are serving the nation by driving the Winnebago through Iowa, I was put in mind of the once-famous Sulllivan Brothers, five Iowa boys who were all in the navy during WWII, were all serving on the same ship, and were all killed at the same time. I hadn't thought of the Sullivan Brothers in years. After their deaths, the military put in a rule that blood relatives could not all serve in the same unit. So the Romney boys should not all be riding around in the same Winnebago.

Heh.

    to a remark that Edger wrote here.

    Here is an an essay at DU which does a better job explaining why so many have so little time to familiarize themselves with civic events.

    The numbers of lives involved in these huge statistics seems to loose virtually all meaning to most individuals.

    Here's a quick glimpse at a specific picture most can get their head around. (vidmax}

    I was particularly struck by these paragraphs:
    Out of the suffering and degradation of the great depression out forefathers built a new America. A new America built with new ideas foremost of which is there is no limit on how high you may rise but there is a limit on how far you will be allowed to fall. Instead of spouting Bible verses they codified into law that we are our brothers keepers. That "the people" in the Constitution meant we not me or mine but we. We must reestablish those old new ideas!

    We have been undone, the lessons they learned have been mainly forgotten. The goals they once achieved are now rolled back like the hands on a clock. The 40-hour week, overtime pay, labor unions, the GI Bill, quality public schools even good roads and bridges are no longer certainties The beatings they took we must take again but unlike our forefathers we know what the answers are.

    I think we all know what the answers are, but some pretend not to know.

    We are our brothers keepers. We'd better be, because we get what we give, and we lose what we try to take, I think.

    Sullivan Brothers (5.00 / 3) (#5)
    by john horse on Thu Aug 09, 2007 at 05:16:26 PM EST
    The first time I heard of the Sullivan brothers was through my brother.  After coming home from Vietnam he briefly made a living as a writer.  One day he told me he was writing an article about the Sullivan brothers for a magazine in a foreign country.  He told me their story but I'll never forget the reason why he said he was writing the article.  He said in the country that this article was appearing there was anti-American sentiment among some groups.  Americans were looked at as monsters who placed no value on human life.  He just wanted them to know that this just wasn't true, that we really are a decent people.  Thats what the story of the Sulllivan brothers is really about.

    It troubles and angers me when I see our President reinforce the very image of the ugly American that my brother wrote against.

    Why are they using a Winnie?  I thought the missionaries use bikes?

    Well, atleast they're not driving off the side of the road in Maine or stealing from the taxpayer via a S&L {{cough}}

    Mitt's pop, Gov George Romney of Michigan was a vietnam hawk until mid 1967, yet Mitt didn't enlist and fight daddy's war.  I'll give George Romney credit, he saw the light before TET.

    For some young enterpriser out there (risky business reference) it would be worth the effort to look up all of Mitt's "we're not the police man of the world," anti nation building rhetoric from his senate run in 1994.

    what I wanna know...(to quote a great man) besides doubling the size of GITMO (who knew Mitt suffered from envy), what would Romney do in Iraq?  Oh, if someone justed asked, I'd love to see his  deer-in-the-headlights/dan qualye response.
