John Edwards to Announce Anti-Terrorism Plan

John Edwards will announce a plan against terrorism tomorrow.

The former North Carolina senator and Democratic presidential candidate is planning to propose creating a "Counterterrorism and Intelligence Treaty Organization." This would serve as a kind of modern-day NATO, giving member countries a way to better track terrorists' communications, recruiting and financing, on the theory that breaking up plots requires cross-border cooperation, as shown in Germany's foiling of an alleged plot this week.

....The new structure is needed, say those advising Edwards, given that NATO does not include many countries in which Islamic terrorists operate, and given that other international bodies, such as the UN and Interpol, include countries that have contributed to the world terror threat. To belong to the new international body, countries would have to pledge to tough criteria for pursuing extremists or terrorism financing within their own borders, and nations that declined to take part would be singled out, which could encourage more assistance from nations such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, Edwards's advisers say.

The plan includes:

.... providing 1,000 scholarships to promote better language skills in the diplomatic and intelligence corps, greater emphasis on "human intelligence" generally, and more focus on staving off radicalism in Muslim communities within America.

Bush's GWOT and now he is providing a real plan that foucses on terrorists instead of a false metaphor of the GWOT.  He is right to call it a political sledgehammer.

    Clinton still supports Bush's GWOT.

Edwards sees a multi-prong approach to address specific terrorist groups, actual people, including addressing world poverty where terrotists can recruit and which makes countries unstable.  He fights real threats, not a method that can never be defeated.

It's good to see a Front Pager, a blogger who is well known, post a favorable article on John Edwards.  Thanks, Jeralyn.

You and BTD have a good place here.  I'll be by more (and bring friends!)

addressing world poverty where terrotists can recruit

Hello!  Addressing world poverty is an OK Miss America line, but it is well beyond the capability of the office of the US president to do very much about it.  Mugabe is busy increasing world poverty in Zimbabwe.  President Edwards can't do much about that.

More to the point, the recuits seem to be educated middle class and the well to do.

saying adressing world terrorism ISNT "beyond the capability of the office of the U.S president."

At least poverty can be located in space and time.
