New Format for Live-Blogging South Carolina Results

Big Tent Democrat and I are going to try something new tonight. We have new software for live-blogging. It's much faster and we can do it together without fear of erasing the other's comments. Readers can also submit comments to us while we're live-blogging and we can include some in the live-blog. You can also comment as usual in the comments.

When we go live, at 6:30 pm ET, you may want to bookmark the permalink (the link that says "there's more...permalink...comment" )because the live blog will appear in the "more" section so that it can be wider than the front page allows.

This is just a reminder thread. It's an experiment, we'll see how it goes! Tips for readers are below. (Link here if you want to know more.).

Update: You can still comment and have your own conversation going in the comment thread to the live-blog thread as always. The tips below are just for those who would like us to include their comment in the actual live-blog part. In other words, there are two ways to submit comments. [More....]

  • There’s nothing to do during a live blog other than read, watch and occasionally send in a comment or vote in the polling questions.
  • It’s not a chatroom. You go to largely find out what the writer has to say. An open chat with thirty or more readers turns into poor, disjointed content very quickly.
  • Your comments are published at the writer’s discretion. They see everything sent to them but only they can publish your comments for everyone to see.
  • Our ‘autoscroll’ feature ensures you’re always shown the newest content without having to refresh or scroll your screen. You can toggle this on or off by using the controls at the bottom of the live blog.
  • Subtle sound effects alert you to new content as the writer publishes it. This can also be toggled on or off as you like.
  • Hope you'll join us, again, we'll start at 6:30 pm.

    Do I understand correctly (5.00 / 1) (#2)
by andgarden on Sat Jan 26, 2008 at 01:34:48 PM EST
that we're going to lose the usual comments section? I have a feeling that might make the experience a little less interactive than normal.

Can we get a preview of how this is going to look?

    Comments are the same (5.00 / 1) (#6)
by Jeralyn on Sat Jan 26, 2008 at 02:30:50 PM EST
you can comment in either place. To discuss with each other, do what you always do. Just comment here in the comments section.

It just will upload what Big Tent and I write faster. Give it a try.

    I will. I just enjoy (5.00 / 1) (#9)

in the comments section while the other is live-blogging. It's too labor and time intensive with the editing of the live-blog. We may have more time to comment along with you this way, we'll see. And Big Tent and I can still go back and forth from the live blog to the comments when we want.

this isnt a debate where you need to be fast to catch the moment.  You two should be fine and the regular posters should be fine in the thread/comments.

I will miss it so no error messages for me tonight! :-)

    Have fun.

    Why (none / 0) (#8)
by squeaky on Sat Jan 26, 2008 at 02:33:27 PM EST
It will be just the same except the post section will be basically between BTD and JM. The peanut gallery will be the same as usual.

TO me it sounds like a big improvement for live blogging.

This system will be great tonight (none / 0) (#10)
by Big Tent Democrat on Sat Jan 26, 2008 at 02:39:36 PM EST
Jeralyn will be concentrating on the results and the demos and the electoral storylines.

I will be focused on the media coverage.

I will be looking to the commenters to point out interesting themes, atrocities by the pundits, etc and will be levating those to our live blog.

    It should be great.

    Thanks, Big Tent (5.00 / 1) (#15)

And just so the rest of you know, both Big Tent and I spent a lot of time today doing practice versions. It's definitely a learning curve, trying new software.   We can insert you tubes, polls and images on the fly.  (Although I'm not sure I have that down yet and I'm now going offline for a few hours so that part may or may not happen.)

And if you submit comments through the live thread, we can see them instantaneously without having to exit the writing template to view them.
