New Hampshire Results: First Thread

Thread One....Numbers, Predictions, Reactions? New Threads are below.

Update: (TL 10:50 pm):Hillary won! End of live updates.

Update: (TL 10:33 pm): AP is predicting Hillary the winner.

Update (TL 10:24pm): 63% in, still Hillary 39% to Obama's 36%. The votes are coming in slower now. What takes college towns so long to count their votes?

Wolf Blitzer says her 4,000 vote, 3% lead is a "slight" lead. He calls the race "a nailbiter."

Update (TL 10:11 pm): 62% in and Hillary's still ahead, 39% to 36%. Wapole and Mason, the Beyond Currier and Ives town expected to go for Obama are already in and counted.

Update (TL 10:05 pm): The pundits are all surprised. 60% in, Hillary 39% to Obama 37%. But the college towns of Hanover and Durham aren't in yet. Two more Volvo towns, going for Obama as expected, are in: Peterborough and Portsmouth.

Update (TL): 9:45 pm:47% in, Hillary back up to 40%. Looking at the county map, except for Hanover and Durham, the Volvo towns are in. It's "gray power" according to CNN. More older voters and women going for Hillary.

Update (TL: 9:37 pm): 45% in, Hillary 39%, Obama 37%. The college towns like Hanover aren't in yet. Hanover (home to Dartmouth) had a huge turnout today, more than 2,000 than expected. Keene and some more Volvo towns are in, but Hillary's still ahead. is in. Women so far are turning out more for Hillary, however -- by a 13 point margin. And the CNN pundits are still bashing the Clintons.

Update (TL: 9:14 pm): 35% in, Hillary 40%, Obama 36%.

Update: (TL: 9:02 pm): 27% in, CNN reports Hillary 40%, Obama 36%.

Update (TL, 8:53 pm ET): 22% of the vote in, Hillary 40%, Obama 34%

Update (TL): CNN says with 17% in, it's Hillary 40% to Obama 36%. CNN calls the Republican race for McCain. She's ahead in Manchester right now but all the votes aren't in there. Obama took at least one of them, Concord.

The vote by county results are here. Here's a description -- I'm waiting to see the "Volvo Town" results.

Update [2008-1-8 21:6:37 by Big Tent Democrat]: CNN Exit Polling shows Hillary MIGHT have won New Hampshire. she took 47% of the women's vote to Obama's 34%. She lost men to Obama 42 to 30%. Women comprised 57% if the vote. The Media Misogyny is not taken to kindly by women. My math tells me that means Hillary won.

That would be a shocking result.

Update [2008-1-8 20:9:5 by Big Tent Democrat]: WMUR says the "refreshed" exit polls show a close race. I think we have to expect it to be close now. Hillary has the "Comeback Kid" story revving up.

Update [2008-1-8 19:57:49 by Big Tent Democrat]: Watching WMUR- the ABC NH affiliate, the hinting is closer than expected. Expecting the Comeback Kid line.

I hope it is true. I hate the Media and I hate the way Hillary has been treated.

Something else, it seems clear that Edwards got buried. He should drop out right? Where's Joe Trippi?

Hanover had 6,000 voters, undoubtedly mostly for Obama, and the results aren't in yet. But as I'm updating above, the other Volvo towns are in.

The same Andrea Mitchell who, on the night of the Iowa caucus, said Clinton's venue was "seems manufactured?"  As opposed to an organic campaign venue, I guess.

I think a competitive race helps both Hillary and Obama, but especially Hillary. If she wins now, there will be no talk of a "coronation": this will be a tooth and nails, hard-fought victory.
On Obama's  side, should he win, I hope it will only be after he is forced to define himself more clearly, especially with regards to his promises of bipartisanship.
Let's see the nuts and bolts of THAT.
As I've said in other comments, I think  Obama is not stupid---he must be planning to give up something to get the  Republicans on his side.
Social Security as we know it is my guess.

away a "moral" victory for Hillary. I never expected it to be close so she'll be happy and energized tonight no matter the outcome. Unless the college kids really do blow her away.

And I can now say Chris M. is very subdued.
