Yeah, let's send that around to the swing states.

But this will not stop me from voting for Obama. Even if I hadn't already decided to do so -- with some enthusiasm, finally -- the painful, cringeworthy devolution of the McCain campaign would impel me to put it out of its misery.

it.  I guess I'm just not "hip" enough.  This kind of thing would scare my 74-year old mother.  On the other hand, I know some younger people who would love it.  But the young crowd is already in Obama's court.  I can see the Republicans trying to make some hay out of this, in a very ugly and negative way.  I don't think this is a smart thing to send around.

but I think the Obama campaign has inspired some pretty horrible music thus far.  I HATED the will.i.am. song "yes we can" during the primaries.  This song is pretty terrible.  And Ludacris' rap insulted Hillary, which I'm not going to be singing along to anytime soon.

Man, I HATE that "yes, we can" song.  I think Obama has been doing better since that phrase was pushed into the background.  Hallelujah.

the "Yes we can" song and video.  It had an entirely different tone than this one though.  It was really creative and inspirational, and peaceful.  This one gives me an entirely different vibe.  And right from the start, the prophecy thing turned me off.  This election has nothing to do with any prophecy.   This is real life.  And what prophecy are they talking about anyway?  If it's MLK Jr. they are talking about, he was a really admirable leader, but a prophet?

by joanneleon on Thu Oct 23, 2008 at 12:24:21 AM EST
Enough with the "prophecy" stuff.  Gad.  "The One" and now "prophecy" and such.  Haven't we "been there done that" -- with disastrous results?  The Oprah preaching about "the One" and the speech about the light shining down really, really turned me against Obama way back when.  I don't think I'm the only one.  So we're past that now, and we're going to go down that path again?

Please, somebody, step in before this goes viral.

Wow, I thought better of Quincy Jones.  He really thinks this is going to help?  I'd love to hear an explanation of why this would be beneficial to Obama and exactly how this is going to help him get elected.

This doesn't even resemble what Obama is all about and it's contrary to his peaceful message.

"War" painted on the woman's face?  Contrary to everything Obama has been saying.

"Don't try to stop me" because it's a "prophecy"?  Isn't that a bit nonsensical?  And I'm not even getting into the fact that threats of violence are implied.

Gotta hope this doesn't pick up steam.

Jeralyn, do you really want people to spread this around?  Am I missing something here?  I'm sincere in asking this question.  Is this about voter suppression?  If so, why the prophecy stuff?  Please enlighten me.

    It's about empowerment (5.00 / 1) (#28)
by Jeralyn on Thu Oct 23, 2008 at 12:32:14 AM EST
It's directed to the millions who are going to vote for the first time -- motivated by a vision they have of change. It tells them they can't be stopped from making their voices heard via the voting booth. It calls for them to come together and participate, via voting.

It's grown on me. I don't think I got it the first time, but when the TL kid said he liked it, I watched again. I've watched it four times now and each time I like it more.

It's not about Obama, other than he is the reason millions have decided to participate. It's about them -- the millions who have decided to exercise their voice through their vote and become engaged in our participatory democracy.

    Okay (5.00 / 1) (#32)
by joanneleon on Thu Oct 23, 2008 at 01:18:12 AM EST
I can get with the first time voters, participation, empowerment, your vote is meaningful message.

I've watched it five times now, and went over to YouTube to see what kind of response it's getting.  So far I've found no evidence that anyone gets the deeper message.  Just a lot of cheerleading and fighting with Republican trolls who are leaving comments and such.

But what's with the "prophecy" meme?  Is there an actual prophecy that they are referring to?  Is it alluding to MLK Jr.'s "I have a Dream" speech?

The "prophecy" keyword is causing all sorts of strange videos to be displayed in the "Related Videos" list that displays in two different places on the screen.  So far I've seen "Illuminati" and "Astrology" and something about a prophecy about Israel, Iran and the U.S.  There are response videos with UFOs and crap.  Plus, the first video listed in QD3ENT's list of "More from QD3ENT" is titled "LIL WAYNE EXCLUSIVE... Gang Related".

I don't know.  I'll try to keep an open mind I guess, but all I can picture is three days of cable news shows and morning shows playing this thing, etc. etc.  I'm still waiting for the Rev. Wright videos again too -- I figured McCain would pull those out about 2 weeks before the election.  Nerve wracking.  Can't wait to get this over with.

Everything else aside, I think using things like "prophecy" is a spectacularly bad idea, and though you're explaining that this isn't about Obama, I think it will be seen that way.

Well, I misinterpreted that one.  The way the still photo displays on the page, the "No" is hidden by the black arrow.  Now I see that it says "No War".  So I can scratch off one of the things that I thought was negative and contrary to Obama's message.  Phew.

    Sonar ping?  What's that about?

The Prophecy?  Oh terrific, that reinforces the Messiah nonsense.  And leads one to wonder what happens should Obama lose.  Prophets and prophecies are scary.

Those supporting it ... those fearing it get smaller and smaller.  Odd dichotomy: you either support or else you're just afraid.  No room for reasonable disagreement.

There are three people focused on: two black men who are shown "live", and one still of a caucasian woman.  Doesn't scream diversity to me.

In short, the whole thing shouts to me that "William Ayers was a revolutionary bomber and Obama is the logical extension of that.  Come join the race war."

Those are just my opinions, and once again, I'll try to innoculate myself by saying I am voting Obama, but really, once more, his supporters are the worse part of the campaign.

    A really horrible video.

    Is there a ratings discussion thread? (5.00 / 2) (#30)
by jerry on Thu Oct 23, 2008 at 01:12:57 AM EST
Now, I am completely aware that the ratings here are 99.999% meaningless.  But I do appreciate a discussion.  So when I consistently get the same rating over and over from the same person, and never once get a comment from that person explaining the rating, or the weakness of my argument,

    that doesn't feel good.

It feels like it is harassment.

It doesn't lend itself to a conversation.

We're all big kids here, and the name of the site is "Talk" "Left", I would like to encourage people to have a conversation, and instead of rating a comment low, consider instead replying to it.

Every criticism you have is not wrong of course and I'll be sure to engage you directly. When I give a negative rating it's because it's usually some ad homiem attack within a comment.  I didn't realize I was giving you an unfair and/or noticeable amount of negative ratings and I'll be more cognizant in the future. tell me about it. I have been living in the states for the past 20 years!
You really have not been giving me any significant number of negative ratings. I was judging you more on the ratings you have given other commentors that I completely agree with.

I have lived and studied in Asia, the middle-east and the US and I have been a minority in every place either because of my skin color or my religion. I was thrilled when Obama said he was running for president because I really felt like I could identify with him and I thought it was high time the US elected a person of color (man or woman).
But I will be honest and tell you the more I watched him and learned of him the more I came to dislike him. Dubya still holds the no.1 spot on that list but Obama is not far behind. With Bush my expectations were very low to begin with and he met and beat them!
I had very high hopes for Obama and so far he is not meeting them.  HE is very likely the next POTUS, I will wait and see how he governs.
