The Polls - Zogby's Sunday Talk Play

The only thing worth mentioning today in the polling is the laughs we get watching John Zogby's attempts to get mentioned on the Sunday Talk shows. As I have declared for years now, John Zogby is a clown, not a pollster. His guiding priniciple as a "pollster" is to come up with the result that is most likely to get him publicity. He does not fail us this morning as he has a big move for McCain. It will be interesting to see who besides Fox bites.

Among the real polls, Obama's lead remains siginificant and steady. DKos/R2000 has Obama by 11, 51-40. Ras has Obama by 8, 52-44. Gallup has Obama by 8, 51-43. ABC/WaPo has Obama up 9, 53-44. Hotline has Obama by 7, 50-43. IBD/TIPP has Obama by 4, 46-42 (Obama is trending up in this poll, which had McCain only down one a few days ago.)

They're in full-scale retreat from reality mode, for all the talk of "Race Riots" if Obama doesn't win, I think from the way the FR are talking someone needs to guard against OKCesque stuff from those guys.

Um, wow even if you give them the "tossups" as states which have been won by the GOP in the last 2 decades and McCain is within say 8, PA, OR, IA, MI, and MN aren't tossups. I mean Oregon, really, why not just call Arizona and Alaska tossups while we're at it.

no criteria for making states red or blue. From the map, it looks lkie the blue threshold is larger than the red.

5 Ways to make looking at the polls fun! (5.00 / 1) (#5)
by Robot Porter on Sun Oct 26, 2008 at 09:43:52 AM EST
    1.  Pretend the margin of error is 15+/-.

    2.  Convert all poll discussion into Pig Latin.

    3.  Actually slice a pie based on current polls, and take the Obama "half."

    4.  Replace "Obama" with your name, and pretend that you're about to win the presidency.

    5.  Four words:  Electoral College Map Twister!

And he was successful (none / 0) (#3)

McCain just cited his poll on Meet the Press to argue that he is only behind 4 points.

Does this mean he fired his pollster and now is relying on Zogby?

He also said that the enthusiasm at his events is high. I guess if you call handing out 3000 tickets to your event and only 800 people show up compared to Obama getting 45K in the same city enthusiasm, then he is doing great!

    This is over.

Just watching McCain on MTP now (5.00 / 0) (#13)

What a crank!  Arguing about polls, Reagan raising taxes, snide laughter at Obama's record.  What an angry crankpot.

I so want to check FreeRepublic for their thoughts on this-
two weeks ago: Zogby was the closest in 1996
last week: Zogby is a dirty Arab (this is not an exaggeration, basically every other post or comment was a shot at Zogby ethnicity).
    this week: ?

Do you think he's starting to hate Palin (none / 0) (#9)
by Socraticsilence on Sun Oct 26, 2008 at 02:03:46 PM EST
I'm starting to get that vibe, and you'd think that the event attendance disparity that you mentioned would exacerbate that situation (what with Palin doing only slightly worse than Obama).

But what's the evidence he intentionally manipulates?

This isn't a rhetorical question -- I'm not denying it's possible, just looking for the evidence.

There is no evidence (none / 0) (#10)
by Socraticsilence on Sun Oct 26, 2008 at 02:06:27 PM EST
Its impossible to prove-- not because the accusation is so out there but because Zogby "black boxes" his raw data (not totally uncommon now-- pollsters like to keep their LV formula's close to the vest, but Zogby black boxed everything even in June). Additionally the guy has a tendency to post glorified internet polls (not clear on teh methodolgy of Zogby Interactive).
