Twisted in Colorado Springs

Cutting off a deer's antlers to make a political point? There are some very sick people in America.

Police in Colorado Springs are looking for the person who threw the head of a deer into the parking lot of a Barack Obama campaign office. The head was found late Saturday night. The Humane Society says the buck's antlers had been cut off to make the head resemble a donkey, the symbol of the Democratic Party.

Police will step up their patrols of campaign offices in Colorado Springs through election day.

Michelle Obama is in Colorado Springs to speak at an early voting rally at 6pm MT. Our local news will probably live-stream it. Try 7News (ABC), 9News (NBC) or 4 News (CBS.) Update: Try here at this Colorado Springs station.

the sickness of Republicans. As far as I'm concerned, this incident should be considered a threat against Obama and the FBI should investigate it as one.

This was a pretty sick stunt, to be sure, but lets not turn it into another "assasination plot" or anything.

This country, and the world, is chock-full of sick puppies...simple cost of doing business on planet earth.  We can't sick the FBI on all of them.

After thinking about it for a bit, I'm surprised it hasn't been worse.  Let's hope that this week doesn't bring more incidents like that one.  It's mischief week too, come to think of it.  Halloween has been completely obscured by the election, even with my boys who are usually pretty excited about Halloween.

How disgusting though.  I can't imagine doing something like that -- and involving killing an animal.

I can remember when there were a lot of stories about white supremacy groups, some years ago, and hearing that their areas of strength, headquarters of sorts, were in Colorado and Idaho.  Is that still true?

    Oh, please, get a grip. (3.50 / 2) (#16)

It's deer hunting season in Colorado. People kill deer for food. They remove the antlers for trophies. There's nothing any more disgusting about it than the millions of cattle that are killed for beef every year. Even if you are a vegetarian, millions of animals are killed every year when wheat and other crops are harvested.

And how do they know the antlers were removed to make it look like a donkey? Somebody's doing some major projection here.

So now all hunters are white supremacists?

I am SO not looking forward to the next four years.

It's using of killing of animals for pranks that are intended to intimidate -- that's what's disgusting.

I don't have any problem with responsible hunting.  I do have a problem with taking a deer's head and putting it in a parking lot of a campaign office as a fear tactic.

Responsible hunters have respect for their prey and for nature in general.  This wasn't the act of any responsible hunter.  I think you are the one who needs to get a grip.

You see a white supremacist behind every aspen tree in Colorado, but I'm the one who needs to get a grip.

Spare me your encyclopedic knowledge of "responsible" hunters. It sounds like you think a responsible hunter would give his prey a decent Christian burial rather than eat it.

I truly hate to think anyone killed and mutilated a deer for a brutal act like this.

Isn't it possible that a legitimate, licensed hunter shot the deer, gutted and cleaned it the way all hunters do, and "kids" got ahold of the head?

    It's not currently deer season here. (1.00 / 1) (#14)

horrific things when it comes to animals. And then the public/authorities writes it off as "boys will be boys" (if it's a group) or it was just a dog, deer, whatever. . . in many cases. I'd like to think they stole daddy's dear head off the wall, but since the Humane Society was involved . . .

How many responsible hunters leave deer heads around? I don't hunt, but that doesn't sound like something they would do. I know dog owners who feed raw get parts from hunters or places that process for hunters, but beyond that, my knowledge of responsible hunters is minimal. I do think respect for the animals is part of the process, so I would expect that all parts were handled responsibly.

I will say, I prefer the McCain camp response vs the police spokesperson

"We're certainly concerned that someone would do something so ridiculous," said Lt. David Whitlock, a police spokeswoman.

Colorado John McCain spokesman Tom Kise called the incident "despicable."

Deer season in CO runs from the end of August to the end of December.

Colorado John McCain spokesman Tom Kise called the incident "despicable."

"Hopefully, we can continue to have a constructive dialogue and not have it digress into this hate speech," Kise said.

by echinopsia on Wed Oct 29, 2008 at 03:44:43 PM EST
the more it bothers me. But not in the way that many of you think.

Now, I know that Obama is the only (nominally) Democratic candidate we've got, as Miz Molly would have said. But he ain't no delicate flower, people.

This is the candidate who accused his opponent in the primary, a Democratic senator and former FLOTUS, of wanting him assassinated. Compared to that, a deer head anonymously thrown in a strip mall parking lot just isn't pearl-clutching, hand-me-my-smelling-salts material. And try as I might, I can't find it any more racially tinged than "fairy tale" was.

Yeah, I know it's fun to let your imagination run wild about the ignorant evil fundie rednecks in Colorado Springs. And sure, it wasn't a nice thing to do. But "twisted"? "Sick"? "Hate speech"? Not hardly.

Could we please stop with the truly disgusting practice of assuming everyone who doesn't like Obama is a frothing neoNazi skinhead white supremacist racist? There are plenty of reasons to not like Obama, and for most people who don't like him his skin color is not even on the list.

And a deer's head with the antlers cut off does not look like a donkey. It looks like a deer  without antlers.

Hunters cut off antlers for trophies, not to make deer heads look like donkeys, no matter what the Humane Society imagines in its fevered dreams. They deal with domestic animals, not wildlife, and they aren't forensic psychologists.

The Co. Springs police spokesperson had it right - it's a ridiculous stunt. No more.

And the McCain campaign called it "despicable," which is more than Obama or his campaign ever did to denounce the truly disgusting way Obama followers and the media and her own party savaged Hillary Clinton.

i just heard that Michelle was talking to a couple
of friends and mentioned that the one thing she
was looking forward to about becoming first lady, was that she would have one up on Oprah.  what does this mean?  anyone else out there here this. guess she was commenting on how Oprah has been the #1 African American Woman ever in this country and that she knows she will never have her money, but will have something that she doesn't.  if this is true, shame on Michelle.  Oprah has done a lot of chairity
work and given $ to all - what exactly has Michelle
    done for anyone else.
