Oscar Starring Roles: Who Would the Candidates Be?

In recognition of the Oscars tonight, Wayne Slater at the Dallas Morning News asks, "Which movie characters do the current crop of presidential hopefuls most resemble?"

I think the choice for Hillary is great.

Tess McGill in "Working Girl," -- she's learned the ropes and is ready to run the boardroom.

Obama: Slater narrows it to three.

1) Jefferson Smith in "Mr Smith Goes to Washington." Jimmy Stewart offers change in the nation's capital.

2) Neo (Keanu Reeves) in "The Matrix" -- Morpheus wants to know, "Is he the one?"

3) Chauncey Gardner in "Being There." To hear Hillary say it, there's more metaphor than meat in Obama's rhetoric. Was it Obama who said, "There will be growth in the spring!"

Huckabee? He asks if Gomer Pyle ever made a movie.

What would your picks be?

Obama as Andy Griffith's character in "A Face In the Crowd"
Elia Kazan's "A Face in the Crowd" charts the rise of a raucous hayseed named Lonesome Rhodes (Andy Griffith) from itinerant Ozark guitar picker to local media rabble-rouser to TV superstar and political king-maker. Patricia Neal plays Marcia Jeffries, the innocent Sarah Lawrence girl who discovers the great man in a back-country jail and is the first to fall under his spell.

...throw in Joanne Woodward and give me "They Might Be Giants", with our good Senators in the starring roles.  (For those of you who haven't seen it: Scott believes he's Sherlock Holmes.  Psychotherapist Woodward tries to talk him out of it, not aided at all by her name -- Dr. Watson.  It's marvelous.)

As to John McCain...hmm...how about Captain Queeg in "The Caine Mutiny"?

the Neo thing is something I'd thought of independently, as a snarky sort of joke.

Of course, it may just be because of thereisnospoon's posts that I made the connection.

     at least once.

He was originally a member of the ensemble of Andy Griffith's Mayberry, RFD and then, in an attempt to prove himself as a man, joined the Marines in this episode.  It actually seems one of the better ways to spin off a series that has been invented.

Then, in 1986, there was "Return to Mayberry" a TV reunion-movie of the sort that comes along for once-popular series, when the owners need to freshen up the audience for syndication.

And, he also played Pvt. Homer Lyle in Cannonball Run II (and I'm not going to link to that)....

Pity is, he had a really excellent singing voice and playing a yahoo didn't give him much opportunity to use it in the forum where he was seen most - the TV sitcom series.

Actually, this is a movie that shows with hard honest ambition, a good heart, and intelligence, you can succeed. She is the good person in this movie.

Figured that. But they are missing out on some good old movies. Off subject. I just was out to dinner with 6 girl friends. 3 Dems said they were voting for Hillary. One Rep for McCain and raised her eyes that we were talking politics. And 3 talking about their kids and missing the conversation. One non blogger asked me where did Obama come from. Remember, this is Penna. So, that was the dinner poll. FYI. I don't think PA will be like Texas.

Gary Cooper in that movie with Barbara Stanwyk. Sorry, can't think of the name but they make him famous.

With the weeks of gnashing and anger over the "pimp" remark you'd think people here I'd figure you folks would be all over MSNBC and the AP "exposing" unpatriotic Obama. You know, like he doesn't salute the flag or wear a flag pin, etc.

    Obama? Jimmy Stewart?

In August 1943 he was finally assigned to the 445th Bombardment Group in Sioux City, Iowa, first as Operations Officer of the 703rd Bombardment Squadron and then its commander. In December, the 445th Bombardment Group flew its B-24 Liberator bombers to RAF Tibenham, England and immediately began combat operations. While flying missions over Germany, Stewart was promoted to Major. In March 1944, he was transferred as group operations officer to the 453rd Bombardment Group, a new B-24 unit that had been experiencing difficulties. As a means to inspire his new group, Stewart flew as command pilot in the lead B-24 on numerous missions deep into Nazi-occupied Europe. These missions went uncounted at Stewart's orders. His "official" total is listed as 20 and are limited to those with the 445th. In 1944, he twice received the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions in combat and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. He also received the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. In July 1944, after flying 20 combat missions, Stewart was made chief of staff of the 2nd Combat Bombardment Wing of the Eighth Air Force. Before the war ended, he was promoted to colonel, one of only a few Americans to rise from private to colonel in four years.
