I'm writing this after the Oscars ended and I've scanned all the live-blog comments. (Sorry if I rehash anything.)
In retrospect, some of Jon Stewart's introductory comments were the awkward-moment highlights of the night.
He was doing movie synopses and when he got to Away from Her (with Julie Christie) he said: "It was a moving story of a woman who forgets her own husband. Hillary Clinton called it the feel good movie of the year". Sort of funny, maybe...
The joke got some initial applause, and then the audience HOOED and BOOED rather LONG and LOUD. There were no cutaway shots of the audience. Stewart made a sort of referee's hand gesture to cut the booing short. And then said: "It could happen to your guys too, believe me". Weird.
Also weird that Stewart got deep into Obama's name: "Barack Hussein Obama...middle name of Iraq's former dictator...last name rhymes with Usama" etc. he finished off with a comparison to a prior, hypothetical candidate named "Gaydolf Titler". Lots of cutaways to audience members laughing...strange.
Judging by this, the writers are still on strike and Stewart is way past his expiration date.

the Oscars were better 10 years ago. Every year they kinda suck, but we watch them anyway--don't want to miss that one great moment.

This may sound morbid, but I look forward to the in memoriam part, almost always make me tear up. And you have those "oh I forget he died" and "what she's dead?" moments.

made me a fan the other night in the debate, even with the overdone Obama fandom. But I could look at him and hear that accent again, youbetcha -- and I definitely thought it was cool to hear questions in Spanish. We need much more diversity on tv than just white and black, about as far as the networks have "advanced."

Shrek 3 bored me stiff.

But We all went to see Spiderwick yesterday (rainstorm again)

LOVED it....the kids came home and spent the rest of the day in the yard in a rainstorm hunting fairies.

No lowered expectations this time. This was a really good movie.

So we went to the movies.

We all loved the movie: my 9 year old boy, my 5 year old girl, and the grown ups who were ready to hate it.

Ratatouille was great...one of the few animated films I liked. Saw the French short animated..Only Pigeons go to Heaven...it was good...but no oscar...My fave is No Country for Old Men...Josh Brolin is a big Hillary supporter....so is Jack Nicholson...doesn't that say it all....and Jon Stewart, the Obama supporter is awful...a reminder of how we will all feel if Obama is nominated...I agree with everyone here...it all feels flat...they didn't have much time to put this together though...but any of the women would have been better..than Jon...or Dave Letterman (also nice to HIllary) Jon Stewart really sounds bad...but ever since he became an Obamamaniac, he became less funny.

No Country for Old Men...perfectly captures our current emotional zeitgeist.

The only thing that keeps this interesting is to be catty and criticize the women and admire the men. That may sound sexist, but there it is.

So far the worst has been Jennifer Hudson's dress and the statue of liberty, I mean Tilda Swinton. George Clooney was made to wear a tux, but Jack always gets my vote--don't care how many years pass.

This weekend. It's much better than most American biopics (though there is a certain standard formula, and it still follows that formula) of singers. It glosses over some major parts of Edith Piaf's life (like her involvement with the resistance during WW II) - but Cotillard was absolutely fabulous in the movie. I really enjoyed it.

The vibe is just strange tonight...and I for one, absolutely think this divisive election and Hillary trashing, has a lot to do with it. The Obama letdown syndrome is upon us...yet I doubt whether most people know what exactly is missing tonight. I'll venture a guess...JOY...there is no joy...And who could be joyful at what has occurred to the Democratic Party?

For those who haven't seen it...No Country for Old Men is a must see movie. It is sensational.
There will be blood is good...but doesn't resonate in quite the way that No Country does.
Juno is fun for all and the others are entertaining...but No Country will make you think about it long afterward. It is riveting.

when I watched the 80 years of best pictures, I got emotional. American film really is exceptional at its best. Though these days, television is where the creativity is. I recommend Mad Men (cable) for those who haven't seen it yet. The global conglomerates have done their best to take all the creativity out of filmmaking...and only greats like the Coen brothers or Paul Thomas Anderson and a few others of course, can survive the corporate world's suffocating influence. Though this year has been particularly good for films, all in all...when you consider the films up for best picture.

I had a shortie under the Oscars prediction thread. But I didn't get into anything past best Actor/Actress/Director/Movie. I don't even know what was up for Best Animation, and usually I do.
Speaking of which, watch for w.a.l.l.e., the new PIXAR animation to be big/probably at teh Oscars next year. WonderCon had a nice preview of it and it looks really great.
