Austin, TX Mayor Charged in and Admits Assault:

Austin, TX Mayor Will Wynn was charged with assault two days ago. Today, he admits it and says he has been in anger management counseling for a few years. The assault stems from an incident outside his condominium when a man made fun of his name. Wynn says he let the guy "push his buttons."

A few weeks ago, Wynn endorsed Barack Obama. Obama said he was honored to have Wynn's support. Will we see him on the campaign trail?

Wynn is a hothead. He has to attend counseling (5.00 / 1) (#3)

or do community service as part of the sentencing agreement.  He has a history of losing his temper.  About a month ago he stopped his car in the middle of the street and started screaming and cursing at some construction workers who he thought were causing traffic delays.  He is not suited for leadership.  His wife divorced him some time ago; wonder why.

As I recall, Mayor Wynn was a bit of a Carcetti that day. That construction company was totally in the wrong and cited accordingly. They blocked all but one lane of traffic on W. Fifth Street during rush hour, causing major traffic delays in an area that's already clogged as it is. Wynn's actions may have seemed boorish to the construction workers who had to deal with him, but so what? They didn't have the proper permits.

Will Wynn is one of the greatest names ever for a politician.  If I were him, I would be extremely proud of it.

I agree. He should lightheartedly play it up instead. It would make people laugh, in a positive kind of a way, and build his recognition.

Otherwise, I think this is a nonstory outside of Austin.

I can't fault Obama for this, no matter how much I'd like to. Politics, bedfellows, etc.

    ... I like BTD's response.

How is this relevant to the Obama campaign?  And why are you trying to use this to attack Obama?

Yes, I think even hot-tempered former perpetrators of assault should have the right to vote...I'm silly that way.

It's just a misdemeanor.  I'm no expert, nor even a Texan any more, but as I read it people convicted of or even serving time for a misdemeanor aren't barred from voting in Texas:

    (a) The following classes of persons shall not be allowed to vote in this State:
    (1) persons under 18 years of age;
    (2) persons who have been determined mentally incompetent by a court, subject to such exceptions as the Legislature may make; and
    (3) persons convicted of any felony, subject to such exceptions as the Legislature may make.
    (b) The legislature shall enact laws to exclude from the right of suffrage persons who have been convicted of bribery, perjury, forgery, or other high crimes. (Amended Nov. 8, 1932, Nov. 2, 1954, Nov. 4, 1997, and Nov. 6, 2001.)

That all-nighter stuff this week is just not something I can do anymore. Dragging ever since. . . . I think I still was awake when Clinton, as we heard later, was flying back to D.C. and slept right through a bad storm and turbulence!

I don't understand why people don't care about the relevance to this.  I thought that this blog wasn't JUST about the 2008 campaign, it's about the politics of crime, LOL!  So even if a Clinton supporter had been the crazy hothead (like that Clinton supporter who stabbed an Obama supporter, though it looks like it might've been self defense), I'm sure it would've ended up here too, right?

on sen. obama. would you mind pointing that out for me? obviously mayor wynn has....."issues". apparently, these aren't new "issues", so presumably sen. obama knew what he was getting when he happily accepted his endorsement.

aside from the minor detail of having no self control, i'm sure he's a top notch guy.

And of course the whole Bill pardon issue too (none / 0) (#26)
