CBS Poll on PA College Student Preferences

CBS has a new poll on Pennsylvania college students. The predictable results: they favor Obama. (full results here, pdf.)

Looking at Pennsylvania's demographics and current voter registration statistics (available here in Excel), 10% of PA's voters are in the 18 to 24 age group. 38% are over 55.

I'm not sure how many of those are college students. I suspect there are plenty of registered young voters who are not attending college.

    I know a few young people who are registered and have no intention or interest in voting. I say that because when they got their regular drivers license at 18 at the DMV, they were asked if they wanted to sign up to vote. Most say yes. They might be registered for a party that is their parents. I know my neighbor did not even know the difference but he signed up as a Dem because I had him helping me with Kerry in 04. He is 19.5 now and has yet to vote. I always ask him and volunteer to go with him, but he always says no. So far. I'll get him yet even if he does not have any interest in politics.

    With 159 colleges and universities and approximately 680,000 students, Pennsylvania's campus vote would appear to be Barack Obama's ace in the hole in the state's April 22 primary.

    Yet in a tough contest where Obama will need every vote he can get, it's unlikely that one of his most loyal constituencies will be able to provide him with much of a boost.

    One reason is the nature of the state's college students. With numerous nationally recognized schools ranging from elite, small liberal arts colleges such as Haverford College to the Ivy League's University of Pennsylvania, not to mention enormous public universities such as Penn State, Pennsylvania is a net importer of students.

    As a former college stundent in PA, who was imported from out of state, I can attest to the fact that it was VERY easy to register there.  I voted in 2004 and so did most other out-of-state students I know.  In fact, I know some who never changed their registration and are going back to vote now (not that this is a good thing).

    I'm sure peer pressure has a lot to do with it. Nobody wants to be the one who's voting for Mom.
