Hillary takes the lead on daily Gallup poll (5.00 / 4) (#1)
by zebedee on Sat Apr 19, 2008 at 12:18:33 PM EST
Gallup just posted that Hillary has taken a 1 pt lead on the daily tracking poll. Last two days were good. A 4% swing since yeseterday's 3 day average should mean yesterday's polling was 12% better than 4 days ago, if my understanding on how these polls work is correct.

    This is good news and (5.00 / 3) (#5)
by bjorn on Sat Apr 19, 2008 at 12:28:50 PM EST
hopefully confirms my gut feeling that Hillary is doing way better than most people think.  Some have commented that people are for Hillary in "secret" and I think it might be true.  Obama is so "cool", the media is so for him, I think people don't want to let others know their true leanings sometimes...but maybe the tide is starting to turn in PA.

How the media plays these polls matter a lot. If this was Obama recovering in a few days from a 10 pct deficit it would be breaking news spread over much of the MSM and the lead story on Huff Po, Kos etc. They will probably just ignore this one though. The only place I've seen it mentioned since it came out almost an hour ago is Kos, which drew around 80 comments dismissing it (only real poll on Tue counts etc)

I hope your gut feeling is right.  I too had a dream that the people who have been victimized by these difficult economic times opened the door for her.  Perhaps my dream is just the product of my ardent desire to see her nominated and elected because I really believe she is the only one of the candidates who can right the ship of state.

    A casual search:

I checked the home pages for CNN, ABC, CBS, and MSNBC and Fox news just now.  Nothing on the front home page.  MSNBC Decision '08 page was pro-Obama.  A search of the sites using the words "Clinton poll PA" brought up mostly Obama-leaning headlines.

On the CBS site, one from April 14th entitled "Poll shows widening lead for Clinton in Pennsylvania" mentions a 20-point lead.  The post ends with, "Twenty points is a very high bar to reach, look for the Clinton camp to be talking a lot about winning narrowly over the next week."

IMO: They are hoping that Obama will win the nomination.  I can only conclude that they believe McCain will knock him down more easily than Clinton in the fall.

I saw it on last Sunday Faith forum, I thought he has just not rested before he showed up. Then at the debate he seemed tired and agitated before it even began (and of course it got worse). And on his stump speech videos he looks like his heart is not in it.

I don't know what it is. I would think it is sheer fatigue, but he has been doing it for a while now and why get tired now?

I wonder if maybe he is starting to realize what the process is really like when the press is not treating you so kindly? I can't imagine it is easy for anyone, which also explains a bit of my admiration for the Clintons.

His eleven 'wins' in a row was like a shot of psychological uppers and his lingering failure to 'close the deal' as in his losses in Texas and Ohio, a psychological let down, punctuated by his obvious poor performance in the recent Philadelphia debates.  His attempt at humor in his campaign speeches after the debate came off as mocking Hillary Clinton.

The MSM should realize by now that Hillary's supporters have the same trait as what they admire in her:  Psychological and intellectual toughness and resolve.

second: I saw it during the debate, where it seems like O is bored with his own rhetoric.  Instead of stating his story as fresh and new, "I was raised by a single mother.  I worked as a community organizer and turned down lucrative job offers in the private sector, in order to help the poor" he just bullet-pointed it, even ticking it off on his fingers: "Raised by a single mother, community organizer, worked for the poor..."

When you speak in public a lot, it's hard to remember that not everyone has heard your story or your stump speech.  You have to present it as new every time.

In short, he seems bored with his own story--and a tad annoyed to have to be repeating it.

I pour it in my kitchen pail with all my other organic waste and dump it all in the pile. There's no odor so I'm assuming it's working.

I've heard many gardeners adding different alcohols to their their compost and regular watering cycles. Hard liquor will help force blooming in many flowers. My neighbor waters her container plants with almost empty wine bottles filled with water. Her plants are beautiful!

So I was watching Bill Maher and Cornel West (5.00 / 2) (#32)
by kayla on Sat Apr 19, 2008 at 01:53:29 PM EST
on youtube just now.  I love Cornel.  Bill was asking incredibly simpleminded questions and Cornel answered with these intelligent musings that encouraged deeper thought.  Basically he took Bill's question and instead of answering it, he asked Bill a better one.  As a viewer, it was fun for me to try to answer Cornel's questions myself.  I found that every answer I came to was a negative for Obama.  I don't know if that's my bias or if Cornel was trying to get to something, but I do know that he doesn't think much of Obama in the first place (or Hillary or McCain either).  It felt like he was being critical of Barack without actually saying it.

Bill: Heh, can a black guy actually be elitist?

What's so stupid about this question is that he asked it in a way where you can tell he expected Cornel to say, "Of course not!  Black people have been through so much; how can they be elitist?"  Just like Michelle and Barack are doing, but instead he answered with:

Cornel: Certainly!  But it depends on how you define elitist - someone who marks themselves as intelligent in the face of relative ignorance or someone who is arrogant and thinks they know more than poorer people.  (that is not a direct quote)

I love that answer because it cuts through the Obamas' bs.  Anybody can be elitist.  It doesn't matter where you grew up or what race you are.  It's an attitude.  My aunt is a black woman who grew up in MS in the sixties and she is now wealthy and probably the most elitist and snobbiest person I have ever met in my life, bless her heart.

And then Bill goes on about how awful the questions were in the last debate.  Cornel goes, and again, not a direct quote:  Alot of people are suffering because of a lack of unconditional love and justice.  The questions do matter, but so does the answers!

Exactly... as a biased Hillary suppoter, I think Hillary answered the questions better and appealed to the people of PA more effectively.  Of course, this is all politics, but at least she made the effort.  Obama didn't.

And then Bill starts talking about how people are now willing to vote for someone smarter than themselves.  He said we voted for Bush because we wanted to think that we could run the country, but now we realize that we can live that fantasy.  Cornel goes:  Is intelligence as important as compassion?

I think they're both important.  And I don't see that Obama really cares about anything but getting himself elected.  He doesn't really stand for anything.  He just goes, "I'm of two minds about that."  Maybe he doesn't want to offend anyone, but I don't like the idea that it is possible that in November I'll be voting for an adult who won't tell me where he stands.

I didn't watch the rest of it, but it was still a nice exercise for me.  We need more thinking people like Cornel around reporting the news and discussing it.  Cornel is a real goofball, but he's very intelligent and fun to watch.

    Obama rally from USAToday...

"She's taken different positions at different times on issues as fundamental as trade, or even the war, to suit the politics of the moment. And when she gets caught at it, the notion is, well, you know what, that's just politics. That's how it works in Washington. You can say one thing here and say another thing there."

"Senator Clinton's essential argument in this campaign is you can't change how the game is played in Washington. Her basic argument is that the slash-and-burn, say-anything, do-anything special interest-driven politics is how it works.... Senator Clinton has internalized a lot of the strategies, the tactics, that have made Washington such a miserable place."

So much for Obama's recent above-the-fray attitude. Not since Clinton was the front-runner last year has her character been so bluntly criticized.

I went to the gym one Sunday morning in the early 80's and he was there. At one point he came over to use the machine next to the one I was on.  There were fewer than 5 people total in the room. I got completely tongue-tied and kicked myself for not wearing makeup to the gym. The other band members walked by at one point but weren't working out. He gave tickets to their show that night to the employees at the desk and chatted with them. He had huge hair and huge thighs, that's my memory.

Somehow many of us seem to think that even if the campaign turns dirty, that the election itself will be magically fair and honest.

The debacle of mishaps with electronic touch-screen voting machines is resulting in their being decertified in many states and carefully examined in others.

Not so in PA, which has its presidential primary is next week.

From the Brad Blog this week, PA election officials defend these machines even though admittedly they know nothing about them.

Here's a question from Brad's post to pose to any election official anywhere who uses these machines (emphasis mine):

Ask any elected official or election official in PA, or anywhere else, if they can prove that even a single vote --- as cast on any touch-screen machine during any actual election --- has ever been recorded and counted accurately as the voter intended. Just evidence of a single such vote will do. They will not be able to do so. None of them.

There is NO possible way to verify ANY vote cast on an electronic touch screen machine.  Period.  They should not be used in our elections, ever.

And even though he looks tired and somber, Suzanne Malveaux just assured me that he's having a great time..he's even blowing the train whistle himself. Ain't that precious. Oh, and Hillary was speaking at the same time but oh gosh when they remembered to cut back to Hillary's speech, such a shame, Hillary was done speaking.

A Greenwald - Digby no holds barred tag team effort.

And since no one asked but it boots Bobo, (who thinks he knows stuff about me and my ilk) in the face, I'm spending the day tricking out my sweet new ride -- a hybrid electric Schwinn -- and retiring my battered Pinarello after (I'm embarrassed to say how many) years of outstanding service. It was a gift from a coodge in the Old Country and way beyond my abilities as a Serious Cyclist. (I just used it boringly: to get places.)

Short story long on the Schwinn: I'm increasing the size of the front tire, replacing the back two with a couple of utility grade fatties, and making it recumbent to go easy on my two blown knee and enabling me to do my nails or surf with my palmbook during gridlock. It could be my imagination but the Pinarello would buck and neigh like a stallion if I rode it at less than racing speed, and that was much of the time.

I'm still on the fence about whether to make the horn on the Schwinn play "Low Rider" or "La Cucaracha" when I bounce it around. (I've added "Wheels on Fire" to the short-list too.)

    Shameless Attacker and Hypocrite (5.00 / 1) (#73)
by TalkRight on Sat Apr 19, 2008 at 03:25:49 PM EST
Sen. Obama is attacking Hillary Clinton about health care in a television advertisement with claims that have been widely discredited by experts.

    1. The Obama ad claims that Hillary's "plan forces everyone to buy insurance even if you can't afford it." Health policy expert Ken Thorpe reviewed this claim and found it to be false. Under Hillary's plan, everyone will be able to afford coverage.

"Ken Thorpe, a health-policy expert at Emory University who has advised all three major Democrats, said he ran cost estimates for the Clinton plan at the Clinton campaign's request, and found there should be enough money to make insurance affordable for all." [Wall Street Journal, 12/5/07]

    2. The advertisement also claims that that Hillary's plan would make people who fail to enroll "pay a penalty." Sen. Obama's own plan would fine parents who fail to enroll their children and he has said he will consider imposing penalties on people who don't enroll.

Hillary would consider a range of ideas, including automatic enrollment, to ensure everyone is covered. Sen. Obama's plan, would, experts agree, leave 15 million people out.

    3. The ad also claims that Sen. Obama's plan reduces costs more than Hillary's plan. There is no citation for this claim because it is false. Hillary's plan has more aggressive cost cutting measures and has more generous subsides. Because Sen. Obama's plan leaves 15 million people out, it would drive costs up, because everyone would have to subsidize emergency care for the uninsured.
