Hillary Clinton's Victory Speech

Update: Here is Hillary's Speech.

****

Hillary Clinton's West Virginia victory speech is about to start. I'll be live-blogging with continuous updates. Feel free to live-blog your reactions in the comments.

9:06 pm ET: Here she is. She's by herself. Thank you West Virginia. Like the song says, "It's Almost Heaven." I am so greatful for this overwhelming vote of confidence. [More...]

There are those who wanted to cut this race short. Give up, it's too hard. Here in W. Va. you know about rough roads to the top of the mountain.

I am more determined than ever to carry on this campaign until everyone has had a chance to have their voices heard.

I need your help to continue this journey. We are in the home stretch, only three weeks left in the final contest. Your support can make the difference. Go to Hillaryclinton.com.

There are many who wanted to declare a nominee before the ballots were cast. Reviews other primaries. This race isn't over. Neither of us has the total delegates it takes to win. Both Obama and I believe the delegates from FL and MI should be seated. She wants to count the votes and delegates.

Under the rules of our party, the total delegates is 2209. Neither of us have that. This win will move me closer.

I want to send a message. I believe I am the strongest candidate to lead our party in NOvember and the strongest president to lead our nation starting in Januaary.

I can win if you decide I should. The choice falls to all of you. I deeply admire Obama but I believe our case is stronger.

We have won millions of votes, 17 million, we've won in states we must win in November. She rattles them off.

No Democrat has won the White House since 1916 without winning W. Va.

The White House is won in the swing states and I am winning the swing states.

We have a vision for America that rewards hard work.

I am ready to go head to head against John McCain. Our party is strong enough for this challenge.

I never give up, I'll stand with you as long as you stand with me. Together we will draw the distinctions with the other party.

Choose who you believe will make the strongest candidate in the fall.

Why did people keep voting? Why did 65% of Democrats say they want the race to continue? People know they need a champion and someone who will never stop fighting for health care, jobs, the economy, homes, affordable college.

This election is about whether the American Dream remains alive and well for our children and grandchildren. At the very least, you should have a President who's on your side.

This fight has been positive for the Democratic party. We are united by common values. We are ocmmitted to putting a Democrat back in the White House. Our nominee will be stronger because of the long fight. I will work my heart out for the nominee to ensure we have a Democrat president.

It's close. A lot depends on those yet to vote. Think hard about how we will win in November. This is for a solemn purpose: to elect a president to turn our country around.

If you give me the chance, I'll come back to W Va in the general election and we'll win the White House.

Praise for Sen. Byrd and Gov. Mansion (sp?). And others.

Kentucky, Oregon, Puerto Rico, South Dakota, Montana. She talks about Florence Dean from South Dakota. She wants an absentee ballot brought to her hospice bedside. She was determined to exercise her right to vote for a woman running for President. Florence passed on a few days ago, but I am eternally grateful to her and her family to have helped her make this milestone.

Let's finish the job we started. America is worth fighting for. G-d Bless and thank you.

Keep in mind how obvious it is that Olbermann is a hack when you remember how often he led lefties in various crusades against the right during the past 5-6 years. Not to say Republicans were right on many of those issues, but it's an good illustration of how demagogues can get outed only when there's a schism of sorts. He is not an honest broker, not on Obama v. Clinton, or Democrats v. Republicans. He's a hack and a propagandist. He can't be trusted on anything.

I just used the same designation the NY Times did when they wrote about Obama's "brilliant" speech writer last year.  It has nothing to do with him being Jewish and everything to do with being out of touch.   He has proven to me that he doesn't know how to capture the attention of middle America and the working class.

I suppose I shouldn't have been lazy and actually tried to google his name instead of just using the characteristics the NY Times supplied.  My mother was Jewish, but she died before she could pass any tradition down to me, but believe me, my daddy instilled in me the utmost respect for the religion and the people.  This was a comment about Obama's folks being out of touch, specifically his young speech writer.  Nothing more or less, so please don't read anything nasty into it.  Y'all should know me better by now!

but somebody has to be responsible for trashing the baby boomers.  It certainly wasn't another baby boomer, or someone who lived every inch of the Reagan years.  To quote a tool, "What's wrong with experience?"

Y'all gotta admit, these phrasings are Clinton-esque.  They always worked on his big speeches together.

Did I hear Wolf saying before they cut to the speech that he'd never seen a (self-declared) winner this far in the contest lose so big to another candidate?  Wow.

And she killed me with that dying old lady.  GREAT story.

    Parent

    I understand what you're saying (5.00 / 2) (#139)
by Iphie on Tue May 13, 2008 at 08:48:50 PM EST
and yes, somebody had to initiate the trashing -- but I'm not sure what being Jewish has to do with it. And there are plenty of boomers out there who are trashing the boomers who are supporting Hillary. Donna Brazile is but one, high profile example with her "new coalition". I've seen Michael Wolfe before, and he is definitely a boomer -- same with Kurt Anderson. If I had to pin the blame on anyone for the trashing of the boomers, I'd place it directly on the candidate himself (or his message maker, Axelrod) -- they are the ones who have tried to make the distinctions with the "old" politics, and the old way of doing things.

But her phrasing and themes are definitely Clintonesque, I agree. Those "old" ideas certainly have some power!

My mom passed on several years ago. She taught me the importance of voting and she started taking me to human rights rallies before I knew how to talk. We marched on Washington together when I was a preteen. She supported me volunteering every day of the week for Anti-war groups. After I married and had a daughter, the three of us women representing three generations, went to the "No Nukes" rally together in Central Park.

She'd be cheering tonight, and she's be like me, shedding a few tears. She loved the Clinton's and all 4 generations of my family felt safe and secure during Bill's years.

    Not So Fast...
    Hillary's Voice is OUR Voice,
And She's Speaking for All of Us

We are the women of this nation. We are rich and poor, young and old, married with kids, married without kids, single moms, gay, straight, and widowed. We are every color. We are of every religion. We are from all political parties.

We love our country. Now more than ever, so much of what we cherish is at risk - our homes and our health, our safety and our planet, our children and our values. We raise our voices, in one glorious, defiant chorus, to tell the world that these times demand strength, courage and vision.

Greta asked if the stats would be diff if only Dems had voted in the primaries - Rove said yes, probably Clinton would be ahead. He expects Obama to win nom bec of wins in red state caucuses but that's a prob for the GE. Rove says students have too much infl in the caucuses bec they're the ones's with the time to participate.

Usually when the media declares a winner, the voters there after vote for the candidate that is declared the winner...   Not so here and it seems to be driving some of these pundits crazy...  They keep declaring him the winner and she keeps coming back...  Now they have lost all last week and I guess they will have to wait at least 2 weeks before they can declare him winner again...

Contrary to what the Washington Post said:

Maybe it's a coincidence, but the venue for Sen. Hillary Clinton's election-night event sure looks tailored to a diminished campaign. Gone are the days of big crowds and bigger stadiums. She will speak tonight in the bowels of a downtown convention center in Charleston, W.Va., where two sets of bleachers will accommodate no more than a few hundred lucky supporters.

by janarchy on Tue May 13, 2008 at 08:51:43 PM EST
McAuliffe just got Tweety all huffy and hysterical about her staying in the race - now Tweety's contending that he (and the other pundits) all want HRC to stay in the race and to have a floor fight at the convention since it's 'exciting'. He totally backpedaled on the whole WWTSBQ line and swore he was never like that.

Meanwhile Amy Klobuchar was just bleating the party line to KO. What is it with these first time Democrat senators? Are they all on Kool-Aid or what?

Congrats to Senator Clinton for the victory. Everyone can see that Hillary has been getting better each month this primary goes on. And if Obama wins, I WANT her to be his Vice-President, it would be stupid of him not to ask her.

2209? Sure, let's do it. I'm pretty sure he'll get that eventually. (That wasn't the number she was using two month ago, but I can wait.)

But once he wins, can we agree to act together to avoid more damage to this country and our constitution? I don't get this. If Hillary had won, I would have been disappointed but I would have respected the results. I beg you to consider the consequences of a McCain presidency. I don't know if this country can take one more term of Republican pillage.

Again, congrats to Senator Clinton on a great night. On to Oregon and Kentucky!

This is the closest campaign in history, she has a much better chance to win that J. Jackson or Ted Kennedy, and they stayed until the end. (By the way, Kennedy's comments the other day sucked.)

Even if she doesn't win, she can use her delegates to pressure for changes in the party's platform (like in healthcare for example).

But whoever wins, McCain winning would be a much worse alternative. You'd think Bush would have taught us that both parties are not the same.
