Good Advice

From a letter Herman Perry wrote to his younger brother shortly before his military execution in 1945:

"I did wrong myself please don't make the same mistake its very easy to get in trouble but hell to get out of . . . "

Good advice. Perry's story, by the way, is fascinating.

What a fascinating story. On more than one occasion I've heard AA soldiers from that era say the racism in the European theater was nothing compared to what was going on in the Pacific.

...my father has told me about being in the Navy in WWII.  As a Jewish kid, he would go down into the lower decks to talk with those black soldiers, who told him many stories of mistreatment by the military, many of being shot at by white American soldiers.  My dad fell for a black woman in Hawaii while on R&R, much to the chagrin of his CO, who promptly had him transferred to Atom Bomb observer (guinea pig) duty.  Says he was always amazed when my mother said she was pregnant, since he'd always assumed he'd be sterile from it.

Thanks for the post, great and illuminating story.

Perry "faced disciplinary charges for missing reveille without explanation" so he walked away from camp and shoots the unarmed officer twice.

Even Mickey Sherman couldn't use the post-traumatic stress disorder defense in this case.

What defense would you provide Perry with?
