Late Night: Keep On Rocking in the Free World

Less cheery, more political version from Fahrenheit 911 here.

Is anyone still up? Here's an open thread for night owls and early birds.

I watched Shut Up and Sing, a documentary about the Dixie Chicks and the firestorm that erupted after lead singer Natalie Maines said she was ashamed that George W. Bush is from Texas.

At one point, Cumulus Media, owner of country radio stations all over the country, banned their stations from playing any Dixie Chicks songs. In response, the Senate Commerce Committee held a hearing on media consolidation in July 2003, while the Iraq war was still considered a success. The committee chair had this to say:

"I was as offended as anyone by the statement of the Dixie Chicks, but to restrain their trade because they exercised their right of free speech is remarkable... It's a strong argument about what media concentration has the possibility of doing. If someone else offends you, and you decide to censor those people, my friend, the erosion of our First Amendment is in progress."

As this campaign rolls on, a lot of people will post a lot of very negative stuff about John McCain. I certainly disagree vehemently with some of his policies, and I can't stand the Republican Party in its current form. But let's not lose sight of the fact that at a time when the war was going well, Bush was still popular and patriotism was running high, John McCain stood up for the Dixie Chicks, who were about as out of favor as it gets at the time. Not every political opponent must be destroyed.

seems to be the plan at most "progressive" blogs.

    I guess they miss Hillary.

And if you ever need proof, I can search up those two Cindy McCain diaries that were on the rec list this spring.  This was when Hillary was still running.  One of the thoughts I had after reading the comments was "This is what they would do to Hillary if they thought they could get away with it.".   It wasn't what was said as much as the sheer enthusiasm with which people gleefully trashed Cindy McCain.

There are two types of Rally-the-Troops memes.  The first is Our Guy Is GREAT! and the second is The Opponent Is An Offensive POS!  Looking at Daily Kos, it's easy to sort many diaries in those two categories.  (Not unlike the primary season.)

Still, I check in every day. Follow a few people around and rate them up so they won't leave.
There continues to be a good front page story or two that manages to be substantive on McCain's or Obama's take on the issues rather than a crappy, tiresome "This is huge! Send it to Olbermann!!!" BREAKING diary on something someone with an agenda read into something McCain or someone else said. Some of it is jawdropping in its twistiness to get to the desired immoral angle or flip flop.

I've been wandering over to see what's up and once I dismissed the frequently overblown Obama/McCain diaries, I was left with not much.  The mission statement says the site is about Electing Democrats and not Supporting Progressive Causes.

What is the purpose of this site?

(Condensed from this diary written by kos in late 2004)
This is a Democratic blog, a partisan blog. One that recognizes that Democrats run from left to right on the ideological spectrum, and yet we're all still in this fight together. We happily embrace centrists like NDN's Simon Rosenberg and Howard Dean, conservatives like Martin Frost and Brad Carson, and liberals like John Kerry and Barack Obama. Liberal? Yeah, we're around here and we're proud. But it's not a liberal blog. It's a Democratic blog with one goal in mind: electoral victory. And since we haven't gotten any of that from the current crew, we're one more thing: a reform blog. The battle for the party is not an ideological battle. It's one between establishment and anti-establishment factions. And as I've said a million times, the status quo is untenable.

That statement is actually mind-boggling to me, and explains an awful lot. So, they are just fighting for democrats no matter what policies they favor, and anti-establishment for the sake of anti-establishment. So funny!

Highly explanatory to me at this point.

    Electoral Victory! (5.00 / 4) (#20)
by Fabian on Sun Jul 27, 2008 at 10:30:03 AM EST
But no, it doesn't say anything one way another about Supporting Progressive Causes.  I think that Democratic Electoral Victory! ought to include supporting progressive causes but it doesn't seem to work that way.  If the goal is to elect more Democrats, then that's how success is measured.   I'm all for partisanship, if the party supports my issues.  If the party ignores my issues, then partisanship is no longer important to me.

    McCain isn't like that anymore.....

I suppose everyone can take the high road and talk only about issues.....But campaigns can be won or lost by such silly things as Al Gore's sigh......

Being above the fray is great.....but doesn't necessarily work.
