Isaac Hayes Died Today

Isaac Hayes, Academy and Grammy Award winner, died this afternoon at the age of 65.

His music, which came to be known as urban-contemporary, paved the way for disco as well as romantic crooners like Barry White. And in his spoken-word introductions and interludes, Hayes was essentially rapping before there was rap. His career hit another high in 1997 when he became the voice of Chef, the sensible school cook and devoted ladies man on the animated TV show "South Park."

"Isaac Hayes embodies everything that's soul music," Collin Stanback, an A&R executive at Stax, told The Associated Press on Sunday. "When you think of soul music you think of Isaac Hayes -- the expression ... the sound and the creativity that goes along with it."

The video above is the wonderful Isaac Hayes version of "Walk On By," the Burt Bacharach song made famous by Dionne Warwick. You can go here if you prefer to remember Hayes by listening to his award-winning "Theme From Shaft."

Memphis has produced some truly amazing musicians.  Issac Hayes is definitely at the top of that list.

"Shaft" always brings me back to a time with some really fun memories.

My heart goes out to the family and his closest friends.

    R.I.P. Isaac.

I have a treadmill too and there is always a temptation to crank it up and push myself too fast. Tokyo is very hot and humid at this time of year. Isaac's death is like a caution signal.

    Bumbershoot.... (none / 0) (#14)

Haven't been to that festival in decades. It started out as just an art fair with a few live performance artists.

I saw the Everly Brothers there back in the early/mid 80's.  I don't even recognize the names of the many, many bands performing this year.

    I was at that Everlys show! (5.00 / 1) (#20)

They had Albert Lee on lead guitar that day and the band totally kicked a$$. They played a smokin' version of "Lucille".

And... it was only $3.00 to get in. Boy those were the old days. Remember way back when Bonnie Raitt always use to open the festival each year with a show on Friday afternoon?

My jazz group played there in the late 80's. I don't go near Bumbershoot now though. The price ain't right, the bands are all for twenty-somethings and the crowds are too scary.

Don (actually, Isaac Don Everly) and Phil Everly... those two take me back: "Cathy's Clown", "Wake Up Little Susie", "All I Have to Do Is Dream". It's hard to believe they were still playing in the 80's. They were hot back in the late fifties early sixties.

    Phil and Don were Simon and Garfunkel's model (5.00 / 1) (#22)
by cymro on Sun Aug 10, 2008 at 11:12:05 PM EST
In 2003 we went to hear Paul Simon on his "Old Friends" tour. Paul Simon credited the Everly Brothers with being his inspiration growing up, saying that when he and Art began singing together as teenagers, they were just trying to sound like them.

Then, to our surprise, Phil and Don appeared onstage, playing a mini-set of several of their hits. It was a nostagic moment -- as a teeenager, the first record I bought was "Dream". And I first saw Simon perform live (mostly solo, a few songs with Garfunkel) in 1965, a few days after he had recorded his "Sounds of Silence" LP in London.

Brings back memories of a college cheerleading routine a long time ago.

Girls' sports have now developed and are on a different level.  But we worked our butts off then.

    65. Still too frakkin' young for such a voice and talent to be stilled. All the good ones goin'...
