Still Waiting, Still Bored . . . Open Thread

Will you roll Biden out already? Sheesh.

This is an Open Thread.

On CNN, a video clip is played of Hillary being asked who Obama should pick, her answer "I'm not in that arena." Then she was asked about whether she is doing enough for Obama. She said "I've done more than anyone who has ever been in my position." Hillary is out.

The pick (Joe Biden) has been told says Gloria Borger.

So the VP announcement is now officially a Friday night news dump.

a conservative friend who was telling me yesterday that of all the Dems in the primaries, Richardson was the only one who impressed him as solid and competent.

I almost sputtered as I started telling stories about the time with Melissa Etheridge at the LBGT forum, and all those other great moments of buffoonery from Richardson.  Pretty soon I had him agreeing that Richardson sucks just as bad as all the other Democrats, which isn't really where I wanted him to end up, but oh well.

Did you tell him that Richardson thinks (5.00 / 2) (#63)
by SarahSpin on Fri Aug 22, 2008 at 02:50:26 PM EST
that it's a good idea to pipe Great Lakes water down to his golf course state, which is overdeveloped and an environmental nightmare?

that border the Great Lakes.  And Canada, but who cares?

I do thank Richardson for the stoooopid comment that may finally have helped to push my recalcitrant state to move forward on the Great Lakes Compact among us 8 states and Canada.  Now signed, sealed, and delivered.

Of course, it could also be the incredible dropoff in Great Lakes levels, of which Richardson apparently was entirely unaware.  Jeesh.  Maybe he thought that all the new beaches here have been here all along.  Or coming from his part of the country, he thinks all that sand is a sign of a good thing.

    How well I recall (5.00 / 2) (#103)
by Steve M on Fri Aug 22, 2008 at 03:04:18 PM EST
from my misspent youth in Michigan, that any politician who proposed to remove so much as a cup of water from the Great Lakes was electorally doomed.  Ah, the power of local issues!

It's funny how much this primary changed my opinion of so many Democrats.  Biden scored a lot of points with me.  Richardson went way, way, way down.  I think the worst was in the chaos after Bhutto's assassination, when he said we should immediately call on Musharraf to step down.  It was then that I realized you can be a good diplomat without having any facility in setting foreign policy whatsoever.

    Parent

    Of course, it's not a "local issue" (5.00 / 1) (#212)
by Cream City on Fri Aug 22, 2008 at 03:57:14 PM EST
when it comes to the ecology of the Great Lakes, not only bordering 8 states but also another country . . . and even in this country, serving as a feeder for so many great rivers that are crucial to even more states.

The impact studies of the dropoffs in lake levels are starting to come in, and the impact is far and wide.  For one thing, every foot of dropoff (and it is a couple now) can have massive impact on  precipitation elsewhere -- and especially in those parts of the country that are desert ecologies but have attempted to look like the Midwest with their lawns that are not natural grasses in their lands.

It's always interesting to remember that the poor agricultural practices to the west of the mighty Mississippi, out there in the Plains states that stripped the natural grasses and topsoil from greed to turn into wheat factories, led to the Dust Bowl storms not that long ago.  And some of that Plains dust carried far and wide, coating the Capitol and the Empire State Building on the East Coast.  And causing health effects far and wide, too.

She let him go on until he asked for a contribution then she said to him, 'Give me a call back after the VP announcement. If it's Hillary, I'll gladly make a donation.'  He sputtered a bit then continued to press for contributions for Senate and House races but every time he took a breath she said, 'You're not listening to me. Since I almost went daft, balmy, and whatever from what not-even-euphemistically could be called coverage this political season, at least the tantalizing taunts they have been receiving from the Obama campaign recently provide needed comic relief. On the other hand, what passes for the national media might actually enjoy being pushed around. They keep asking for more, don't they?

is like 12 hours ahead of Eastern Time, which means if the event goes off live at noon, it's live in NY at midnight.

IF you're into insomnia, it's great - if you want to watch it live.

The first weekend, I was at a friends' place and woke real early (like 5 am), so I wound up flipping on the tube and quietly watching a series of preliminary badminton matches being covered live on one of NBC's cable channels - everything was in Korean, even the chryon.

The live coverage is also targeted to various ethnic audiences here in the States - the Spanish-language channels have had a lot of soccer, for instance.

I'd rather they put it up in something resembling the on-demand features, but (of course) for no additional cost.  IOC should work something like that in to the rights deals.  That way, us [your favorite obscure sport], curling, shotgun sports and wrestling junkies can watch all the sports we want, and not have to watch unending tearjerkers about the hard life of some teenybopper figure skater and her mean boyfriend or whatever.

According to the campaign, in the hours prior to Obama's speech, campaign workers and aids will be on stage encouraging the crowd to use their cell phones to text message friends and family to garner support for the Senator. In addition, aids will be among the crowd distributing "micro-targeted" call sheets and scripts for supporters to use their cell phones to contact Obama supporters or unregistered voters to encourage their support. According to one campaign official, Steve Hildebrand, "There will be a lot of idle time. We put idle people to work."

    The Heck with Obama! (5.00 / 1) (#154)
by southernyankee on Fri Aug 22, 2008 at 03:23:25 PM EST
I have always voted Republican in presidential campaigns (except for Tsongas in the primaries) despite being an independent.  I really disliked the Republican field this year and found myself warming up to Hillary, mostly because of the work she has done in the Senate and her morphing into something approaching a blue dog in the primaries. I would also say that the shabby treatment the media and Obama directed to her influenced me - I love the underdog.

Anyway, why should she take the VP slot?  Obama has never done more than backhand compliment her.  If I were her, I would do the bare minimum for Obama and hope he loses and run a permanent campaign for the four years of McCain.

Well, if you have always voted Republican (none / 0) (#172)

At Rally, Finding Clinton's Aid to Obama Too Tepid

""It was good that she said my supporters need to now support Barack Obama," said Ms. Shaffer, 46, reflecting on Mrs. Clinton's speech before about 700 people. But, she added, "I wanted her to repeat that one more time.""

What the hell is the standard here? How many times does she have to genuflect to Obama in a speech she is making about Obama? She already got groped by Richardson.

I am not the worlds biggest HRC supporter but is there someone else who has done more appearances for him? If he cant win over her supporters, that his is problem.

This is already being set up as the Clintons were the reason that Obama lost.

Although anyone who can beat back the gerrymandering machine of Tom Delay gets some admiration. And he does vote with the Dems the majority of the time (not necessarily an endorsement, considering the lousiness of the Dem Congress!)

I just think that from a media point of view his name adds some juice to a VP-contender list that is extraordinarily snooze worthy. I think, so far, the Democratic convention risks putting us all to sleep.
