Can't Get Drunk On Hope Alone: DNC Orientation Video

Westword is Denver's award-winning, alternative, free weekly paper. It has a section devoted to the Democratic Convention, called Demver. Today's irreverent orientation video is by its "resident fake drunk cowboy" and friends at Wrist Deep Productions.

Given all the anger in the comments here today on serious subjects, hopefully it will make everyone lighten up a bit. This is an open thread.

Me, I'm not a dreamer anymore.  The Dems are turning their sure thing into a nightmare.  Doesn't matter to me, as I'm not in a swing state anymore, either.  (Wish somebody would tell Obama that, though, so they'd run all those @#$%! ads somewhere else.)

As for the nightmare: Zogby just came in with McCain ahead, too.  It's Zogby, yeh.  But maybe that Gallup poll a few days ago wasn't an outlier.  Maybe it was a harbinger.

What I meant is that I think there's no chance he was hinting at that particular issue.  That's not to say that No Quarter might not hit a home run if they keep swinging for the fences!

To me, what he was saying was nothing more than a version of the standard Obama supporter argument for his qualifications - i.e. you say "he's such an unqualified nominee," and they say "that's like totally false dude, he's 35 years old and a natural-born citizen!"  In other words, BC is just stating a truism here, that anyone who is able to run can run.

Assuming, for the sake of argument, that the Clintons had some sort of secret disqualifying information - don't you think they would have brought it out before now?

is a fine newspaper.  A really good friend of mine went to work there when she left the Dallas Observer (another sister paper in the New Times family) when I left to work for the SF Weekly (yet, another New Times gig).

I felt like the SF Weekly was the poor man's Bay Guardian.  I remember leaving that paper to work at Comerica in Palo Alto.  I still love alternative presses.  When I worked in Dallas, a lot of the advertisers minced at the adult ads in the back of the paper.

Whether you agree or not that's what drives the paper!  The adult ads.

    Largest demographic:  Men 18-49
    Reason:  Massage and Escort ads

Editorial was usually like 3rd or 4th.  The "Best Of" issues were SO much fun to sell and we would have BIG parties after we put the paper to bed.

    just now.

    Wow, he's amazing.  Still.

That reporter looked like a frightened rabbit, as well she should.  Of course, the only thing she really spoke up about was pushing the 'your supporters said you were racist.'  That was much abused during the campaign -- any Dem criticizing Hillary was tagged as her supporter, whether they were or not.

I was thinking today, if there was a way, any way, to give the party the well-earned slap they have coming for tagging Bill and Hillary as racist, exploiting sexism, destroying Bill's legacy, violating the principles of Democracy (rcb mtg), and any of the other atrocities I'm missing AND still put a Dem in the WH, then I would vote Dem this year.

But I don't see any way to do that.  You can't unring the bell.  Or in this case, you can't unwhistle the dogwhistle.

Bill - however the GE works out, I have his real thoughts in Jan 2009 to look forward to!  Can't wait.

But regardless of who wins what, I have real doubts that we (the dems) will ever unify - I mean, for a really long time.  If Obama wins in November, there will still be lots of people who are unhappy with him and with what has happened.  If Obama loses, we will continue to fight like cats and dogs, pointing the finger at each other.

That's where my co-op is.  Houses crowded shoulder to shoulder with tiny little yards.  The yards are not neatly tended rectangles of green grass.  They are alive with flowers and not in tidy little beds and borders.  The narrow tree lawns are sometimes planted solidly with a mish mash of flowers.  One fence was over topped with tall coreopsis.  Very tall - easily eight feet.

No neighborhood associations to tell people what is "acceptable" so people experiment with whatever strikes their fancy.  I miss that.  Suburbia is soooo conformist.

As a native, there was a lot of truth to be found in the tongue-in-cheek humor.

The 16th Street Mall is hardly more than store after store selling cheap tourist crap.  Coors is basically a waste water plant, Colfax is pretty shady in places, etc.

Did anyone see Bob Herbert on Morning Joe? (none / 0) (#42)
by kempis on Tue Aug 05, 2008 at 07:48:53 AM EST
Herbert was on yesterday's show, continuing his rant about the ad linking Obama with the vapid celebrities, Paris and Brittney--only he continued to assert there was a sexual subtext to scare white voters who are afraid that black men will "seduce our womenfolk" (my words, not Herbert's--but that's the gist of what he alleges the ad is about.)

It was a disturbing appearance. Herbert seemed "off" somehow, and everyone seated around him seemed politely uncomfortable--and no one challenged him (except Pat Buchanan, of course). They all should have challenged him. He was railing against the use of "two phallic images" to open the ad: the Washington Monument and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Herbert asked what on earth these two phallic symbols had to do with the ad, which mocked Obama's speech before the large crowd in Germany.

Well, the problem is that the ad does not show the Washington Monument nor the Leaning Tower of Pisa. As someone did point out, cautiously, what Herbert thought was the Leaning Tower was in fact the Victory Column--which Obama spoke in front of. Someone should have then said, "Hey, that's not the Washington Monument, either. That's another shot of the Victory Column." And then someone should have answered Herbert's question, "what do these two phallic symbols have to do with Obama's speech?" by pointing out that there is one structure, not two, and its connection to the speech is not incongruous at all but very real: that's where Obama spoke to the large crowd assembled to see the celebrity politician. But no one said that. Instead they let Herbert ramble on like a drunk uncle at Thanksgiving dinner, misinforming viewers....

Also, what did BC mean that he'll wait until January to discuss the primary?  I mean, why not after November?  And if, as we can assume, he's going to call the media and Obama's camp out specifically, then why would he do that just as Obama is about to start his first term?  I have no answers, just food for thought...

    Palin

Flagrant promotion of Alaska's interests, no question. But touchy in the midst of Veep Fever Days which is why it's apparent Palin has zero expectation of Veep-dom and instead is aggressively doing her current day job.

    Unless it's Obama's VP she's auditioning for...? ;)

Still, with both candidates flogging energy proposals right now, it's fun to see a Republican reach across the aisle and be positive about the Dem nominee.
