Palin Visits Philly Bar, Will Spend Week at Debate Camp

Where was Gov. Sarah Palin last night? For an hour before the debate started, she was at an Irish pub in Philly, shaking hands and meeting people.

Palin appeared at the bar on 20th and Walnut streets last night to shake hands with her fans for about an hour before the first presidential debate. While the crowd inside was friendly, hundreds of people lined the street outside in protest with signs that read things like "Palin is Santorum With Lipstick."

She didn't take questions. [More...]

Palin did not take questions from reporters nor did she talk policy. She posed for pictures and chatted with supporters, many of whom were from outside the city limits, and made an approximately minute-long statement.

She will spend the week prepping for the debate in Philly and St. Louis, aside from one day of campaigning with McCain.

Palin was to spend Saturday and Sunday preparing for the debate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She'll campaign with McCain in Columbus, Ohio on Monday, and will spend the rest of the week practicing for the debate in St. Louis. Biden was campaigning with Obama in North Carolina on Saturday.

It would be good not to lower expectations for Palin. She'll be prepped to the gills after a week in debate camp. It's not her first debate.

    Be careful she's a double high. (5.00 / 1) (#2)

Do not underestimate Palin. She's what is known as a double high (see John Dean's book) -- high on authoritarianism and high on social conservativism. This is a formidable combination - e.g. Delay, Rove and Cheney are regarded as double highs. These people are without conscience according to Dean and can be very mean spirited. There'll be much mud slinging against Biden and Obama. They ought to be prepared for it and counter it somehow. It'll consolidate the evangelical base for sure. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think so. She's one tough cookie and doesn't scare easily IMHO.

    No Difference Between Casey & Santorum (5.00 / 1) (#15)

Except the Dems like Bob Casey Jr.  because you know he has the "D" after his name. When it comes to the signature issues of Santorum - Bob Casey Jr. is in complete agreement: anti-choice and anti-stem cell research. In fact. Bob Casey Jr.  (D-PA) has voted against federal funding of stem-cell research. Don't take my word - look it up.

...from some people, like myself, stem cell research could mean the difference between life and death.  Even research advances that mean less pain and suffering would be a godsend.

It certainly is one of the top issues in my little World.

A problem I've noticed time and again is the deal breaker emphasis on one issue. Possibly the single most obvious reason why we have such difficulty defeating the GOP in spite of their terrible record.

Republicans, in general, seem to be able to set aside objections on a given issue or situation and in the end line up in order to get or retain power.

    Perfect!

Absolutely true. And Santorum is Palin with slightly flatter hair.

    from Sarah.

Yes, she is inexperienced on the national stage. Yes, she and McCain deserve to lose because of Republican ideology.

Still, even though the Republicans deserve a good 20-25 years in the wilderness, I get the feeling that SP will cut that time in half once she is free from the McCain groomsters. She has something that Santorum never had - not sure how to say it and perhaps it is just my gender favoritism showing...

You would think she would be bette in giving off the cuff answers.

I hope she repeats the "Putin rears his head, Russian planes flying over Alaska." I suspect Biden would ask, when did the DOD inform you that the Russians invaded US airspace; did you scramble the NG jets and what other measures did you take in response?

wise to pretty much keep her mouth shut around the press until her big night in the spotlight.  Why give up the good stuff now?  Or she could just be stupid on national/foreign policy.  We'll see.

stupid and ignorant on national and foreign policy.

But that doesn't mean that she'll get her clock cleaned.

Joe Biden IMO is the sharpest of the four and I don't believe that it's even close.

Palin has no record to defend and Biden's going to have to be very careful that he doesn't give the impression that he's tearing her apart. He can't let the audience feel sorry for her.

She may be good debating in Alaska, but, as far as her interviews on National Policy, it doesn't look so good.

quite ruthless and a general 'ends above the means' type fundamentalist...which makes for a good base as a debater...

as long as she stays away from discussing the issues (other than maybe the extremist fundamentalist issues) she could come off quite well....

If you look at her (none / 0) (#16)
by Alien Abductee on Sat Sep 27, 2008 at 05:17:41 PM EST
earlier debates when she was running for governor, she's actually quite an accomplished debater, in terms of grasp of policy details and presentation of a pleasant and competent persona, and especially in terms of intuiting what will play well politically to her constituents. Her disastrous interviews make me think Pat Buchanan is right about what the McCain team handlers are doing with her. If you can overlook the anti-semitism, his main insight is that she's a naive traditionalist and they're refashioning her as a neocon ideologue. That means more than just filling in the blanks of her ignorance - it's more like a complete ideological overhaul. She's a neocon "project."

So maybe John McCain has done something worthwhile - destroy a rising star who could have helped in the rebirth of the Republican Party after it spends a suitable amount of time in the wilderness. He's tainted her with Bush-Rove-McCain neoconism and made her look like a fool besides, both of which should be pretty hard to recover from unless she pulls off something miraculous in her debate.
