John McCain's Acceptance Speech: Live Thread

John McCain is about to make his acceptance speech for the Republican nomination for President of these United States.

If you're watching, live blog along with me in the comments.

Update: The video. Did you know John McCain was a POW?

Update: No podium. He waves to the crowd. Sure looked like he raised his arm above his chest to me.

Camera pans to a woman teary-eyed with reverence and he hasn't said anything but "Thank You." [More...]

The crowd's applause may to throw the teleprompter off ... the media says it doesn't stop for applause lines.

9/11, 9/11. Laura Bush. Bush I. Cindy. (What about George W. Bush?, did I miss it?

Violins please: Love Story with Cindy and talk of birth defects.

Throws Obama a respect bone. What's going on. Did a protester just get in? "Please Don't be diverted by the ground noise and the static? Did they plan that or did he ad lib that?

He mentions Palin and she gets more applause than him. You can't even hear him over the applause. That shows you how desperate the evangelical radical right is to get their hands on the White House.

Update: 10:33 pm. This is one of the worst speeches ever. It's boring and not saying anything.

( Note to readers: Don't forget to leave song suggestions in the comments.)

Kiss to James Dobson: Judges who don't legislate from the bench. (Translation: Now can the radical right send me more money?)

Lots of boos. Any rational person would think they are booing McCain, unfortunately they are not.

This speech and McCain's delivery is too poor and embarrassing to keep live-blogging. I'll join you all in comments or new threads.

The POW narrative has become nothing but a mockery of itself.  Long ago it became okay to roll your eyes at this.  That's what exploitation of something does (see Palin family camera shots)

George Michael's Listen Without Prejudice album for the first time in a long time.  A great, heartfelt and socially aware album.  It's not a rocker but I like Praying For Time.  It's hopeful and sad at the same time which is how I feel watching this tonight.

I was NOT a big "Change" person in the primaries but it truly is time.  We are stuck as a nation and we need to get out and open our eyes to bigger things because a lot of America simply feels left behind.  That's what that song says to me, and I think we need that now.

a lot of people still don't know much about it so I am not surprised that they are telling it again. A lot of people don't pay much attention until this point in a campaign so going over this is for the general public as much as the audience.

I have been surprised that the Republicans have not made more of Cindy's work in war areas and in third world countries. That is impressive.

I think the speech is just a lot of Republican same ol' same ol' except for the corruption part. His blaming Republicans was a change from the usual. That was good, but not specific enough. Also blaming Republicans as well as Democrats for our oil dependence. If only he had mentioned Reagan I might vote for the guy.....

It was very jarring. There were several other times the crowd booed or jeered at inappropriate times, I can only guess that there were more protesters, but the camera on CNN did not show them.

So all the audience would see and hear was McCain saying something about the economic troubles facing our country and people booing or screaming "U S A."

"Dogs of War" would be excellent.

    "Pigs" would be sublime.

"Money" would sum the GOPers up pretty well, too.

"Us and Them" another great Floyd Song, and also words that sum up McCain's thoughts on foreign policy.

But that's what torture does -- everyone has to give in eventually.  The reason he refused to go was because the honor system for POWs demands that first in is first out -- the Vietnamese were offering to let him leapfrog prisoners who had been there longer.  He wouldn't go until it was his turn.

I worked for McCain in 1999 and 2000.  I'm voting for Obama; I'm giving all the money I can afford to Obama; and I'm volunteering to do anything I can for Obama.

Looks like that protester did him a huge favor.

I recall Palin was shaky for the first 10 minutes or so but she began to get into a groove and she became very comfortable with the crowd. I think it's natural for even the best speakers to be out-of-form for the first few minutes, especially under the glare of the media spotlights.

But then again, McCain has never been a good speech-giver. He has acknowledged, and many have repeated, that he shines when he speaks off-the-cuff, without a script.

about his POW experience.    Reminds me of some old veterans who buttonhole anyone who will listen to recount their war stories, over and over again.

That was the most boring convention speech of this cycle.
It got really strange at the end, and it seemed to end at the worst time.

Unless he repudiates what his running mate said, his words are empty.  These folks are malevolence incarnate.  They care about nothing but winning.  And their fat wallets.  And their tiny d*cks.  Gracious, my ace.  Gracious would be apologizing for how classless the others have been to Obama.  Spare me.

Anderson Cooper and Campbell Brown just said that McCain made MORE specific proposals about the economy than Obama did.

So I decide to go back to CNN because I got sick of Tweety and Pat Buchanan, so where do I go now.

Castellanos: he's not going to win the election on oratory, but he opened himself up tonight.  He finally shared the secret that he was a POW.  McCain told people who are tired of broken promises that we are going to deliver for you.  He is the reformer. I am change.  I am the change you seek.

    Shoot me now.

when it comes to speeches.  Terrible delivery.  Saving his POW experience for the end was a good idea on his part because he was losing the crowd.

stand up and say that his own party had lost its way and that he was going to take it back.

    The Republicans are totally energized.

Okay, I think I would rather listen to Pat Buchanan than Wolfie.

Now Candy Crowley is saying that this was an anti-Obama speech because it did not include soaring rhetoric.

    Soaring rhetoric is bad.

Palin reached out to the base last night. McCain was reaching out to the middle, to the moderates.  I am not the guy with the R next to his name, I can reach across the aisle and get things done.

Dana Bash: the confetti is really pretty!  John McCain likes confetti and he's finally gotten it.  John McCain talks about service all the time!

McCain was trying to convey that he gets it, he is the change we seek.  The change we can believe in.  The change we need.

And by we, I mean rich people earning over five million dollars.

Tara Wall: Maverick McCain is BACK!

Okay, I am going to go throw up now.  See ya later.

I thought it was ok for him.  POW stuff is his only strong card. Admitting the GOP was off course wasnt unexpected. They didnt seem to like that at first.

The awed and teary look from the crowd had me laughing though. 6 months ago they spit this mans name out like poison and 8 years ago spread rumors that he wasnt one of them, might be insane, etc.   Now they flip a little switch in their minds and he's Jesus.   I dont know what you call that.

with all the Barracuda music, the Palin love-fest and the commercial comparing Palin to Obama I'm starting to wonder who really is running in this election...

I know the extreme Right hoped to have Palin in office in 2012, but maybe they're starting a little early...
I guess they really didn't like the McCain nomination that much, so this is their way of having an extreme social conservative in the office...

I'm starting to worry that McCain will have some sort of medical leave of duty in a year or two if he wins...conspiracy I know..but crazier things have happened (even in the last 8 years)

hopefully we won't have to worry about that in a couple of months...
