that bowl losses by Oklahoma State and Texas Tech are serving to confirm my belief that the Big 12 is a smidge overrated, and that Florida will likely win decisively as a result.

    I agree. (5.00 / 2) (#17)
by MileHi Hawkeye on Fri Jan 02, 2009 at 07:40:32 PM EST
The Big Twelve, with its reliance on offensive fireworks, has been exposed as overrated when facing teams that pay more than lip service to defensive football.

The old saying that defense wins championships still holds true.

OU probably has the best defense in their league--we'll see if it holds up against Florida.  Whichever team makes a defensive stop or two will win the big game.

The real wildcard in this game is if the OU kids are playing in BS's last game as coach. If so, emotions will be running sky high.

Doesn't seem quite right that they go undefeated and will probably end-up no better than #2 in the final poll.

I will admit, everyone I talked with yesterday mentioned how nice it was to hand the Ole' Ballcoach a beating--even if the Gamecocks aren't exactly the cream of the SEC.  So, my view of the SEC may have a bit of a Black and Gold tint to it.

My geography dictates that I see a whole lot of Mountain West football (CSU, Air Force and Wyoming) and they have some quality atheletes and coaches.  The "small" conferences are all better than people seem to think--the MWC, the MAC, the WAC, Conference USA--they can all beat the big boys on any given day.  They deserve that chance.

by Steve M on Sat Jan 03, 2009 at 08:54:40 AM EST
    Consider the following items:

    1. Blagojevich is currently trying hard to rally political support in the AA community to try and survive his ordeal;

    2. It's hard to imagine why Reid's people would leak this conversation, so the leak must have come from Blagojevich's people; and

    3. Blagojevich has a pattern, as documented in the criminal proceeding, of planting false leaks in the press for political gain.

Combine all this with the standard "anonymous source" disclaimers, and I'm very skeptical.  As Blagojevich continues his efforts to rally AA support, it would certainly serve his purposes for people to believe that the Senate Democrats didn't want him to appoint an AA candidate.  The conversation might have happened, of course, but there's plenty of reasons to reserve judgment.

IMO anyway, he was so over the top the day Burris was appointed that I've got to assume few people will take him seriously.

Facts are kind of in a different universe than Rush.

I find it discouraging that some blogs are factoring in Burris' race as a reason to seat him.  Way to play into Blago.  For ex. digby says

I assume the Senate Dems feel that they have to assert themselves or risk being seen as weak. They are, as Jane points out, afraid that John Cornyn will hang Burris around their necks. But unfortunately, they are asserting themselves in a way that simultaneously appears to be petty, unlawful, panicked and potentially even racist.

I love digby but I fail to see how what the Senate is doing is racist.  It is not.  Period.  And it will not be seen as such, if people try to actually understand the legal situation.  And then explain the legal situation.  Which is kind of what I would expect blogs to do.

Reality-based is getting replaced with BlagoVision.  It's absurd.

    But, noooo.

Somehow, just when the Tribune Company was getting ready to sell them, the SEC swooped in and sued Cuban for 4 year-old alleged insider trading.  That made all of like a quarter-mil in savings for him.

Bernie Madoff disappears $50 billion - not a clue.  And Chris Cox flails around like a freshly-castrated steer yelping "no one could have foreseen" over and over.

...some sort of a anti-Cuban bias on the part of MLB and a desire to keep him from owning the Cubbies.  The fact that most owners are probably big-time GOP supporters only adds to the drama.  The timing and severity of the legal actions against Cuban are certainly interesting.

I understand that the Cubs are a keystone franchise and MLB is going to be very protective of them.  But, I also think Cuban would be great for the Cubs and baseball in general, in a Charlie Finley sort of way.  A little new blood wouldn't hurt the old game.

    Parent

Not necessarily Republicans, per se, (none / 0) (#69)
by scribe on Sat Jan 03, 2009 at 08:48:45 AM EST
but rather, MLB owners, who are largely if not exclusively big-time Republicans.  Remember, since baseball has an exemption from the antitrust laws, they think it is perfectly acceptable to collude and conspire to restrain trade by doing things like ... steering ownership decisions from "best price/most competitive owners" to "best buddies of the Commissioner".  And, for a lot of these owners, all their status in the community is a function of owning the team.  And, to buy the team, the owners have to allow you in.

The thing is, most if not all of the franchises - even the ones which lose games all the time - are a license to print money, reegardless of the quality of the game put on the field.  It's an example of "you'll eat what we serve you and like it, particularly if you don't know there's anything better".  (They make money in ways unimaginable. Stepping to the side - did you know that press box journalists at Washington Redskins games have to pay for internet access:  $80 for one game, $250 for the season's games?  To plug in to the internet (apparently, no wireless....).)

With one owner like Steinbrenner - who is willing to spend the GNP of a small European country for a new pitcher - driving up labor (player) prices, the other owners either have to meet him in that market, or gather together to impose a luxury tax on him.  Many of them take their revenue sharing and send it directly to their own pockets rather than invest it in better player development and the like. That doesn't stop them from loving it when the Yankees come to town b/c they know they will sell out and they can charge premium prices for those games.  But they don't want to compete in the labor market on anything approaching a level field.

Adding another such competitive owner like Cuban will only drive up labor prices and give another vote for getting rid of the luxury tax on high payrolls.  So, they want to keep him out.  You think they still have former owner G.W. Bush on speed dial?  Julio Franco - a former Ranger player - does.

...outside, I'd give it the edge.  Who needs hockey in Florida for cryin' out loud.

I really hope the Av's play a game at Coors Field one of these times.  That would be worth the price of admission.

In a contest with BB, hockey is always going to come in second simply because I spent my childhood on the courts.  It was my passion.  Now, that's not to say I don't love a good Stanley Cup run or the speed and skill of hockey players.

Mid-teens.  Whoopee!!  My woodstove can cope with my drafty old house down to about here, the single digits and below-zero we've been having, not so much.  I HATE, HATE, HATE the sound of that boiler kicking on.  Sounds like burning dollar bills.

I'll try that next time. The problem is, I'm a complete moron when it comes to computers. I know how to type (more hunt and peck than anything), and hit POST. Beyond that, it's all Greek to me, (actually that's not really true, I studied Greek for 4 years in college. So really it should be something like, "It's all {insert obscure language other than Greek or Hebrew here} to me".

did anyone see Tapper and Sun Times reports on Reid calls to Blago putting the kaibosh on Davis, Jones or Jackson Jr to replace PEBO?

Seems Reid is on tape, and Sun Times says it fits with Blagos taped call saying he was under pressure NOT to apoint Jesse Jr, that was pressure direct from Reid, great..

Blago is gonna claim he was playing ball..no wonder Fitz needs 90 more days, were I his atty I would say he was under pressure and just talking the talk, he has the tapes to prove it thanks to Reid, what a maroon
