Sunday Night Open Thread

The Iron Chef finale or the Americn Music Awards? I'm watching both, but I'd rather be watching Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters. (No spoilers please until the West coast has had a chance to view it.) I don't think either of tonight's two finalists are up to past Iron Chefs.

I highly recommend AMC's The Prisoner, which re-airs episodes 1 and 2 tonight. There's also Sunday Night Football.

Here's an open thread, all topics welcome, TV related or not.

She is always bizarre, but she really outdid herself tonight. From the really weird flesh colored costumes to the glass and bottle smashing, the floor routine that resembled an exercise class and the change of songs in the middle (or so it seemed), it was very strange. But, it was compelling. Carrie Underwood, who preceded her, seemed totally plastic by comparison (and her stage was too cluttered with stringy looking people, very claustrophobic feeling. I don't think I ever heard Rhianna sing before, I don't think I missed much. I'm actually looking forward to some normalcy and Taylor Swift.  Music has really gone downhill in the last 30 years.  Most of the songs sound  alike and like bubblegum.

Kool Herc instead of Clive Campbell.

Clive Campbell (born April 16, 1955), also known as Kool Herc, DJ Kool Herc and Kool DJ Herc, is a Jamaican-born DJ who is credited with originating hip hop music, in the Bronx, New York City. His playing of hard funk records of the sort typified by James Brown was an alternative both to the violent gang culture of the Bronx and to the nascent popularity of disco in the 1970s. In 1972, in response to the reactions of his dancers, Campbell began to isolate the instrumental portion of the record which emphasized the drum beat--the "break"--and switch from one break to another to yet another.

I only started watching about 5 episodes ago, and didn't bother to look at the qualifications of the contestants until a few minutes ago. I was surprised to see how many great NY restaurants Mehta worked at, while Garces has only worked at his own, all Latin-themed.  Garces is more personable, and probably the more careful and disciplined chef, but I think I'd rather eat what Mehta was cooking. He seemed more adventurous and willing to take chances, like with the ice cream machine. (And his Mumbai heritage may have something to do with it, as I'm pretty focused on India these days, from the new terror case to  working my way through the 900 page Shantarum.)
