R.I.P. Kobe Matisse Rose (Hamsher)

Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake writes tonight of the recent passing of Kobe Mattisse Rose, her beautiful poodle who was the inspiration for the blog. It's one of the most moving posts I've ever read.

I had the privilege of spending a week in CT with Jane, Kobe, Lucy and Katie (here's a pic of what the poodles were like together.) Jane and Kobe were so in sync -- so much a part of each other. She's really hurting, but her post is beautiful -- and about how much he gave her to be thankful for. I can't think of a more uplifting way to end Thanksgiving evening, and I hope you'll all take a few minutes to read it.

R.I.P. Kobe. Jane, we love you.

I read Jane's post in its entirety and wept. I was happy to find that Glenn Greenwald is a mensch of a friend to Jane. His words to her are so true and such a comfort to all of us who've suffered the loss of a blessed animal companion. Especially when we feel badly that they've died alone:
I called Glenn and told him Kobe was gone, and how guilty I felt for not being there with him when he passed. Glenn said that his mother had actually collected stories of people and animals and how they would rally just before they died so they could spend meaningful time with the people they loved, and then failed quickly and wanted to be alone when they passed.  He said it was an incredible tribute to Kobe and his great spirit, his compassion and his kindness that he let me know it was time to go, and then rallied in spite of it so we could have that wonderful last few hours together.  He said Kobe did not want my last memory of him to be of his death.

    So sorry Jane (5.00 / 1) (#2)

Beautiful post, and she described it so well for those of us in mourning for our canine best friends. It feels like that to me to- like I have lost part of myself that I will never get back.  Very comforting to me as well to think that my Ruffy is really still a part of me. I do feel that sometimes.

I spent part of my hike the other day spreading his ashes in Cherry Creek and other places we had such wonderful times together in Colorado. And my friends that I am staying with now have his mother, so that has been lovely, but melancholy  at the same time. They both have the same habits and spirit.

Anyway I know there are many dog lovers on this site and we all feel for Jane and Kobe. Peace be with them both.

how some dogs can so complete us and yet we are usually the one that needs to stay behind. Are they sent to as teachers to lesser beings?  Do they help us along and then comes a time when we have to grow up and use what they taught us without them? Depending on the dog and the relationship it can hurt so much, but we never want to wish it away either and many human beings will always have our dogs.

    I'm glad Kobe and Jane found each other (5.00 / 2) (#4)

and shared so many good years of companionship and love together.
Her post perfectly captured the pain of loss and brought back many sad memories and some tears too. It's hard to put into words the bond that can exist betwn humans and their animal companions but Jane captured it perfectly.
Blessings and peace to Jane and Kobe.

    I hope Kobe (5.00 / 1) (#5)

is frolicking happily in some splendid dimension with my Mickey, the blond cocker spaniel boy who graced my life for 17 years. Mickey just adored those tall, dark and handsome guys like Kobe.

Thank you, Jane, for sharing your story--such a gift. As you know, the love never dies.

No way to read it with dry eyes, especially how Kobe rallied to make the parting a little better one last time.  Jane was right to be thankful, even though she's in a world of pain right now.  My heart goes out.

What a gifted writer she is.  She captured so well our love for our canine family members.  Bless her for writing it and you for sharing it with us.
