Saturday Afternoon Open Thread

It's been over 70 degrees in Denver this week. Anita arrived last night from Owl Farm -- she's been staying here a night a week or so during the months of the LSAT prep course in Denver. She has a practice test today and when it's over, we're heading up to Boulder for the afternoon. She brought me a copy of her latest book, Ancient Gonzo Wisdom: Interviews with Hunter S. Thompson. It's a compilation of Hunter S. Thompson's media interviews (including transcripts of tv and radio interviews) over a period of 40 years. She has spent the past few years sifting through the archives and boxes in the basement to find and edit the material, not a small task. From the reviews, she has done a great job, as always. [More...]

....because Anita Thompson has done such an extensive excavation of the Thompson archives—including transcribing rare broadcast interviews in addition to his most important interviews from the publication of Hell’s Angels right up through the months before his death in 2004—this is the vital volume…Trying to pick out the best, or most interesting, interviews here is, of course, impossible. Thompson’s mind is so sharp, his responses so detailed, his considerable charm consistently outpaces his crankiness, even in the later years that it’s hard even to choose a favorite… Ancient Gonzo Wisdom: Interviews with Hunter S. Thompson is as close as we as readers can get to having Thompson as a conversational companion. It’s challenging and clever, frustrating and funny, and it’s a great companion to his canon.”

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

    Josh and I go back to (5.00 / 1) (#2)

the Shrine hospital tomorrow, and I'm much better informed now.  I just wanted to thank everyone here for their support when we got home from the last appointment.  We are also going back to see Joshua's old Ortho surgeon in Colorado Springs in January.  I was so shocked last month with the physician discussion about wanting to remove Joshua's feet, which he walks on painfree right now.  Every adult I have spoken to with Freeman Sheldon Syndrome says do not allow anyone to do anything radical to Joshua either.  Many of them survived such "fixes" that turned out not to be worth it in the end.  I'm fine without my husband in general but I do wish he was here for this.  He fights insanity so much better than I do.  My stomach is in knots, I probably won't sleep tonight.

    I can't imagine anyone who could be a (5.00 / 1) (#3)

stronger advocate for Josh than you are, and even though you would prefer to have your husband at your side so that you don't have to be both of you - if that makes sense - he really will be with you in all the ways that make you so strong.

One thing I know - no one will talk you into anything you aren't convinced is in Josh's best interests.

We'll be thinking of you and Josh and sending whatever good karma and positive energy we have that this moves things in a good direction.

wise empowering mother via the internet better than anyone I know :)  Thank you Anne.  That was exactly what I needed to hear.  It was shocking.  But shocking or not, you are right, there isn't going to be anything happening here other than we will hear what people have to say.  And we will also pick up Joshua's new braces, and that will be nice.  He is getting Auburn colored Nike tennis shoes to go with them.

for sending that weather our way today -- a record high temp for the day, above 70.  And sunny and gorgeous, and we couldn't get ourselves to go inside and get to work for hours.

Last year on this day here, we had the weather that Denver had some days ago.  Snow a year ago. . . .

We had to crack up, too, that our winter farmer's market opened today, with everyone in shorts and shirtsleeves that we couldn't wear for the last month and for much of the summer.  So weird.

Give my regards to Anita. (none / 0) (#10)

I did actually cry when I heard the news about Hunter Thompson. There are very few people I idolize, he was one of them. His death saddened me greatly, but reading his last note, considering some of my own frailties, I understood completely. I hope I have the courage to pick my own time and place.
