Tuesday Afternoon Open Thread

I'm off to court for the afternoon. BTD has many posts up this morning on health care and politics, just scroll down for them.

Via the ACLU: The 9th Circuit held oral argument today in the Boeing-Jeppeson Ghost Air/states secret case.

"To this day, not a single victim of the Bush administration's torture policies has had his day in court. Across the board, the administration is taking positions that deny torture victims any chance for justice," said ACLU staff attorney Ben Wizner. "It is no longer credible to claim that extraordinary rendition is a state secret. This case should be allowed to move forward without further delay."

The ACLU also testified before Congress today, warning that the war on terror must not infringe on constitutionally protected liberties.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome.

In my view, the ghost planes and secret renditons qualify as the worst of the worst of the Bush-corporate-dominated legacies.

And if it hadn't been for Jane Mayer's excellent work on this story, we wouldn't even know about it.

"In a lot of ways Tiger Woods has broken the hearts of a lot of people who looked at him as a role model who was above all those things," said Richard Lapchick, director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports at the University of Central Florida. "It was just so far out of bounds with what anyone considers normal behavior."

must be some really frail hearts out there.

And we really need to stop looking to athletes as role models...whoever came up with such a lame-brain idea?

some athletes are role models, the lame part is which ones and for what reasons.

I think athletes the caliber of Jackie Robinson would be incredible role models. Problem is they don't get noticed.

"normal behavior" bit he is on about being out of bounds...he needs to specify "for a married man".  For a single swinging millionaire bachelor, I'd call Tiger's behavior quite normal...for a married father of two not so much:)
