Leave Ben Nelson Alone!

Unlike many in the blogs, I have been someone who has provided a kind word or 2 for Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson. To be honest, I am greatly surprised that Nelson voted for even the crappy Senate health bill. I credit the health insurance industry's tacit support for the bill, the persuasions of Senator Reid and his loyalty to the Dem Caucus. It surely was not because Nebraskans favored the bill. GOP pollster Ras, perhaps in a final attempt to get Nelson to vote No (or at least hold the line on the senate bill) released a poll showing Nebraskans strongly oppose the health bill (Ras will never tell you about how they feel about the public option or Medicare buy-in):

If Governor Dave Heineman challenges Nelson for the Senate job, a new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows the Republican would get 61% of the vote while Nelson would get just 30%. Nelson was reelected to a second Senate term in 2006 with 64% of the vote. Nelson's health care vote is clearly dragging his numbers down. [. . .] 64% oppose the health care legislation [. . .]

I never thought there were 60 votes for meaningful health care reform, and there aren't. The Senate health bill is not reform. Unless of course you believe in the magical exchanges. This is why the road to meaningful health care reform required a reconciliation strategy.

Speaking for me only

the computer now!  Barbara Boxer tells us all that medicaid is the public option and then we discover that Nelson got great public option for his state.  And the fricken state of Nebraska hasn't got a clue to the fact that their broke a$$ kids may have access to healthcare coverage now thanks to Ben.  Certainly the DLC won't be helping him wage an information battle either because clearly the DLC doesn't want a public option to survive so winger propagandists will run wild across the Nebraskan prairie.

    According to Ras, "Just 17% of Nebraska (5.00 / 2) (#4)

voters approve of the deal their senator made on Medicaid in exchange for his vote in support of the plan."  Nebraskans must really hate free money.

Nebraskans have a little thing called pride and know there is no such thing as free money?  Somebody pays.

Nah...its probably just because Palin and Hannity are against it:)

No free money?  Just try to take their farm subsidies away from them.  They don't mind free money, as long as it goes into their pocket and not some "undesirable" living in Omaha.

That welfare has been accepted and is now not even talked about unless someone is trying to take them away :)  You know what is really terrible, one branch of my family still ranching and that is the most "Conservative" branch and that votes Republican every dang time, recieves the most farm subsidies. And every piece of equipment on their property is air conditioned with a stereo.  They study what is available, make plans years in advance.  My honest much poorer family branch doesn't understand how that branch always does so much better as they toddle off to the barn every morning to do chores before they even have breakfast!  No time to study possible subsidies for not doing things that should be done :)

I can attest that they can be independent-minded to the max, including the women.  I wonder how much of the reaction to Nelson is about his amendment. . . .

in the Ras poll.  That's why we don't know.  The assumption is that the questions that were asked elicited all the reasons for not re-electing Nelson.

The WH has made clear to all of us that the insurance industry has lobbied against Obamacare.  Haven't you been paying attention (er, indoctrinated)?
