Sunday Morning News: Early Edition

An early look at Sunday's news:

  • The New York Times tells Obama to stop sending mixed signals on Guantanamo, state secrets and other Bush policies. The Times urges Obama to get behind an investigation into Bush's policies:
Everyone wants to move forward. The only way to do that, and make sure the system of justice is working properly, is to know exactly how Mr. Bush broke it.
  • The Washington Post has a very interesting, long profile of a how a man whose son was murdered came to forgive his killer and assist him in getting parole.
  • Ali al-Marri's family stands by him as he's moved to Illinios to face criminal charges.

Feel free to add the news you find of interest this morning.

Medical schools cutting budgets (none / 0) (#1)
by Cream City on Sun Mar 22, 2009 at 12:48:45 AM EST
along with colleges and universities doing so across the country, according to this story.  Now, some of these med school cutbacks might mean bringing in line health care costs, as the focus on research facilities over clinical facilities may have helped to make costs go out-of-whack.

But when much of the country is underserved by physicians, and in a country with infant mortality rates rivaling those of Third World countries, this can't be good.  Stimulus funding is supposed to go to education, but apparently not much for medical education.  If it could be directed to more clinical training, and to keeping more med students in school, wouldn't that be wise?

On a related note, not reported in the news but  heard from profs, many students who competed and won internships this summer in several fields --  including many top students who turned down other internships and work opportunities -- now are getting calls canceling their internships at this late date.  This is so wrong and will keep some from returning in fall to complete degrees.

I have to wonder how many future physicians and others could be staying in school for the cost of the AIG and other bonuses.  We will be paying for this economic mess for a long time ahead, in many ways, with the "opportunity costs" lost, too.

State secrets and Bush policies (none / 0) (#2)
by joze46 on Sun Mar 22, 2009 at 07:47:03 AM EST
State secrets and Bush policies are a hot button with me. In my old age there is a realization of this stuff as national security secrets being buried so generations will forget and issues will be lost as record but continue through handed down through whistle blowers authors or just plain ordinary citizens with inside knowledge that know politicians made decisions for private improvement or profiteering.

America moves though time knowing very well it does not understand the real history behind many of the decisions made by our leadership. Some decisions are made with good faith for the general interest and welfare of the country. More over even some of what is considered light to insignificant integrity breaches by individuals are cast aside and kept from the public by insider politicians. Out right mistakes hyped to be fraud or corruption likely are sensationalized by a complicit media. In fact the media prosecutes rather than reports whether it is entertaining or serious. Of course television journalist will deliver what is needed to maintain their salary and bonus.

Even though we can be sure that the Obama team is new with fresh eyes looking into that vault of National Security Secrets will eventually be able to build from some hidden stories or reveal what many may know is explicitly definitely more than criminal actions buried for Statute expiration or Congressional Senate adjustment for a time or later years for eventual profiteering. All premeditated under the notion to protect the public, but eventually leads to where America is now. Jeralyn don't you believe just as plea bargaining is done in semi open federal court actions that our great leadership is constantly making deals behind the scenes. A tit for tat always ongoing the Democrats say this, the Republicans says that to counter a message.

The Majesty of Justice and Spirit of Justice depict a partially nude man and a woman with one breast fully exposed at the justice department. Is that what they say Justice is blind? Or manipulated like heck. Or fondled like the lady of justice statue. Saying that with a chuckle when thinking about the Jackson girl at a half time super bowel concert stuck her nipple in the camera creating a furry.

America has John Ashcroft standing in front of a statue with naked breast feeling guilty so they cover it up. So funny, but what isn't and more obvious is the same feeling must happen across spectrum in deeds or actions to issues when in doubt stash them in the secret files. If we all admit to it the real action in regulation and over sight is buried in our secrets and it will take a lot of courage to release many issues into the public likely the collateral damage will be significant. Many families will be destroyed especially Bush and Cheney's.

    forgiveness? (none / 0) (#3)
by diogenes on Sun Mar 22, 2009 at 05:58:08 PM EST
You can forgive someone all you want, but aiding the parole of someone with multiple prior arrests whose only defense was only that he "shot a gun nine times to scare kids" and couldn't even use the defense to get a conviction of manslaughter instead of murder is fishy.
