Linda Ronstadt Goes to Congress

How could you pick just one Linda Ronstadt song to showcase her incredible talent and career?

Yesterday, she and other performers testified before a Congressional Committee on funding for the arts. Rep. Mike Simpson gave it a royal try: [More...]

“When I heard that Linda Ronstadt would be appearing before our subcommittee, I was tempted to make my opening statement a compilation of all of my favorite Linda Ronstadt lyrics,” said Representative Mike Simpson of Idaho, the senior Republican on the panel. “I was going to open my remarks by saying, ‘people say I am the life of the party because I tell a joke or two.’ ” (See note below.)

As a member of the minority party, Mr. Simpson joked that “I have been cheated. “I have been mistreated.” And he asked the committee chairman, Norm Dicks of Washington, “When will I be loved?” And he added, “I know a thing or two about ‘crying like a rain storm and howling like the wind.’ ”

“In closing, let me say this,” Mr. Simpson added. “I don’t know much. But I know I love the arts and that may be all I need to know.”

I can play on the guitar while singing at the same time. (the others are the Rolling Stones' Dead Flowers and Johnny Cash's Cocaine Blues).

to her first hit, with the Stone Poneys -- when she first won my heart.

But it's still suitable for singing to this Congress, too:

You and I travel to the beat of a different drum
    . . . Oh, can't you tell by the way I run
Every time you make eyes at me.
You cry and moan and say it will work out
But honey child, I've got my doubts
You can't see the forest for the trees. . . .

but Long, Long Time is a real showcase for that pure voice.

I actually met her  back in the 70s when I used to work a concert security gig. She was not only every bit as beautiful as she looked on TV, she was really nice to the grunts which is more than I can say about some of the others I met.

Some say the heart, is just like a wheel
When you bend it, it can't be mended.

    etc. etc.

for singing to Congress already on the list:

Desperado, why dont you come to your senses?
    . . .  Oh, you're a hard one
But I know you got your reasons.
These things that are pleasin' you
    Can hurt you somehow. . . .
    And freedom, oh freedom --
Well, thats just some people talkin'. . . .
