G20: Police Clash With Protesters

(Larger version here.)

I'm not sure why anyone expected the friendly carnival atmosphere to hold, but it didn't.

Sporadic clashes between protesters and police continued into the evening as officers refused to allow demonstrators leave the streets around the Bank of England. Plastic bottles and toilet rolls were thrown at police as the crowd chanted: "Let us out." Simon O'Brien, a Metropolitan police commander, said officers would be making further arrests in the coming days. He also said police would be asking the peaceful "flash camp" of more than 100 tents pitched on Bishopsgate to move on before the morning.

Here's a photo showing the size of the crowd outside the Bank of England.

More sites, as noted earlier:

Another good G20 site: TheCity.co.UK. Lots of folks are using Audioboo, a free i-Phone application. The Telegraph has a good page and is using Twitterfall. And, of course, there's Twitter.

The BBC has a live map where you can follow the G20 by exploring London in video, audio, pictures and text. The Guardian's page is here and their hour by hour protest map is here. [Hat tip to Journalism.uk).

From what I read the violence started when the crowd got caged.

demonstrating crowd I can't blame the actions of some of the crowd on the whole crowd.  There seemed to be a lot of anarchists involved today too with the signature dressed in black and scarves covering their face.  I have nothing against anarchists.  I'm just not one, and they tend to sometimes demonstrate a little differently than others who may be demonstrating right next to them.

...i've tended to find that the protest going anarchists are a bunch of  *-holes.  It's not like they are on the same level as the NUM miners from 1984 battling the state and Thatcherism and having a meaningful battle with authority.  Most of em will take off the masks in a few years and swan off to a cushy job at Ameren or Barclays that dad lined up.

anarchists. As a Buddhist though, there's probably nothing more dangerous than a system that easily avoids all challenges about its competency and need.

on the anarchists but at this G20 I have more in common with them then the politicians who are in love with debt.

They actually have a point.  Why we in the industrialized world have created a false economy built on debt much of the world has lived in poverty and we've only raised the standard of living in countries that could give us resources and cheep labor.

Maybe if we'd developed Africa and other third wourld countries and created real wealth instead of debt through finance we wouldn't be in this mess.

    Sigh.

And currently my own leader is doing his darnedest to hide truths under nice vocabulary rugs and scrubbed website rugs where hopefully joe sixpack won't see them or can't see them.  The system needs correction but the oligarchy is doing everything they can to prevent that to detriment of all the rest of us peons.  I'm not feeling much distaste for anarchists tonight either.

I remember the anarchists from the WTO riot in Seattle. Bunch of idiots. Their smashing up stuff just encouraged small gangs of smash and grab types later in the evening.  As it got dark it changed from demonstration to looting in Belltown.

That's why the police finally moved in and pushed everyone out of the city.

I liked the flash camp idea though. (none / 0) (#4)

there are those who care more than me and are raising some hell...that's the important thing, don't let these bastards meet in peace to further rig the game and preserve their gluttonous slice of the pie.

They'll get the big slice anyway, but at least give them pause and maybe get a bone or two thrown our way.
