Thursday Night Open Thread

I missed the whole day's news due to work, but I'm going to catch up as I watch TV: there's a new episode of Gray's Anatomy, and Southland, the new, depressing LA cop show, is more watchable than Crash.

Think good thoughts for Jay Leno who is in the hospital with an undisclosed but reportedly minor illness. He's expected back next week.

This is an open thread, all topics welcome. What's on your agenda and mind tonight?

"i'm sorry but i have to sue you for breach of copyright. It took me years to write that song, and your dog has stolen both the music and the lyrics!"

remind me why we support these people.  I keep forgetting.

Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, who in 2002 was the ranking Democrat on the House committee, has said in public statements that she recalls being briefed on the methods, including waterboarding. She insists, however, that the lawmakers were told only that the C.I.A. believed the methods were legal -- not that they were going to be used.

By contrast, the ranking Republican on the House committee at the time, Porter J. Goss of Florida, who later served as C.I.A. director, recalls a clear message that the methods would be used.

"We were briefed, and we certainly understood what C.I.A. was doing," Mr. Goss said in an interview. "Not only was there no objection, there was actually concern about whether the agency was doing enough."

but this whole torture "debate" is mind blowing.  If there was one thing, as an American, that I thought I'd never hear, it is people publicly defending torture.  What's the real deal here, I wonder.
I love those shows too. Southland is intense. Are you watching In Treatment this season?

Evolution and Development class this quarter.

Tomorrow we talk about Platyhelminthes (flat worms).  These little guys are model experimental organisms for stem cell research because you can cut them into (exactly) 279 pieces, and each piece will regenerate into a new worm.  And no, I'm not sure what would happen if they were cut into 280 pieces ;-).  They have nothing but a tube for a gut, a neural net (no spine) and "eye spots" that recognize light, can't really see per se.

But I'm sure there's a political analogy in there somewhere, scratching head.  Haven't figured it out.  Maybe someone can help me.

In the race to beat Minnesota (none / 0) (#4)

From the Lower Hudson Valley News

ALBANY (AP) - Democrat Scott Murphy leads Republican Jim Tedisco by 401 votes out of more than 160,000 votes cast. And of the contested ballots not yet counted in the 20th Congressional District, twice as many are from voters registered in the Democratic Party or allied minor parties compared to those from voters registered in the Republican Party and its allies.

From Capital News 9 in Saratoga

A finish line could be in sight in the race for the 20th Congressional District. With the numbers not looking good for Republican Jim Tedisco, sources tell Capital News 9 that Tedisco could concede to Democrat Scott Murphy as soon as Friday afternoon.

It should come as no surprise that Texas (none / 0) (#10)
by easilydistracted on Fri Apr 24, 2009 at 08:46:42 AM EST
is right there with Alaska, perhaps a bit closer to getting it.

AUSTIN -- Legislation allowing state university students and employees to carry their concealed handguns on campus appears to have enough pledged support from lawmakers to pass the full Texas House.

The bill would prohibit public universities across Texas from creating rules that forbid concealed handgun license holders from carrying their pistols into a classroom, but it would allow private institutions to exempt themselves.

Chances for passage in the House -- if it gets there -- look strong, as 76 members have signed on to support the bill, authored by Rep. Joe Driver, R-Garland.

this is good news I guess.  someone said yesterday the danger here was overstated.  I dont think Secretary Clinton is given to rash overstatements in cases like this.
its hard to overstate the danger of the likes of the Taliban yahoos getting thier hands on actual nuclear weapons. IMO
