Former Blogger Running for Office

Judd Legum, founder of the Center for American Progress blog, Think Progress, is running for the state legislature in Maryland.

In 2007, Judd became the research director for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. As to running for Congress, Judd says:

I learned at ThinkProgress what can be accomplished if you combine serious policy ideas with engaging political communication. I want to take what I’ve learned and bring progressive values to the state capital in Maryland.

Judd answered questions today over at Crooks and Liars. There's more over at Daily Kos.

Maryland would be fortunate to have Judd as a legislator. I hope you will go on over to his Act Blue page and contribute. His Republican opponent is an extremist, especially on marriage issues: [More...]

Via America Blog:

Judd is targeting a Republican named Ron George, who is one of the most right-wing members of the Maryland House of Delegates. George is a co-sponsor of "Maryland's Marriage Protection Act," a state constitutional amendment that's widely viewed as Maryland's version of Proposition 8. The bill would not only write discrimination against gays and lesbians into the Maryland constitution, it would "affect the ability of the State and local governments to extend benefits to partners of the same sex," such as hospital visitation.

George is also the co-sponsor of a constitution amendment that "would define anything from a fertilized egg through a full-term fetus as a person... a strategy for effectively outlawing abortion" no matter what the circumstance.

Again, Judd's Act Blue page is here. He needs your help. Let's bring this one home for him.

    HB913, is pretty simple:
SECTION 1. BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF
MARYLAND, (Three-fifths of all the members elected to each of the two Houses concurring), That it be proposed that the Maryland Constitution read as follows:

    Article XV - Miscellaneous

    8. MARRIAGE BETWEEN ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN SHALL BE THE ONLY DOMESTIC LEGAL UNION VALID OR RECOGNIZED IN THIS STATE.

not in the 30th District, Ron George is an embarrassment and that Marriage Protection Act is just awful.

I don't believe either this amendment, or the one on abortion, would pass, but it's a shame any time even needs to be spent defeating them.
