Friday Night Open Thread

I'm going to watch Last Chance Harvey and Benjamin Button, both of which arrived via Netflix this week.

What's going on in your neck of the woods? Here's an open thread to discuss more important -- or less important -- matters.

All topics welcome.

republicans are threatening to open investigations into clinton era "renditions" and "torture", should the obama administration have the audacity to actually investigate/prosecute those responsible for detainee torture/deaths in afghanistan/iraq.

aside from the fact that the republicans can't really do squat, being in the minority, i should think they should have done this, before any statute of limitations expired, other than on deaths.

they're so cute, when they try to be relevant!

    Friday night (5.00 / 1) (#8)

It's Saturday morning here in Rome Italy.  Last night, Friday night, I saw something for the second time in the 20 years I live here.  Next door, one of the young female neighbors was serenaded as part of a traditional Roman engagement ritual.  The modern version of this age-old tradition involves incredibly powerful speakers and a Karaoke set-up. The target of the attention comes out on the balcony, reminiscent of Juliet, I suppose.  The young suitor must have to do some ritualistic dealings with his future father-in-law, I don't know.

Italy is an enchanting country with never-ending surprises, many of which can be taken two ways.  Often it's up to the observer to decide.

I saw the same ritual in Zacatecas Mexico (none / 0) (#10)

many years ago, except it was the night before the wedding. Tradition called for my brother to organize the men in the wedding party and come and serenade his fiance.  My sister and I visiting for the wedding were staying at her house. She also had some sisters and we all were inside doing girly wedding preparations. It was so much fun, and felt very old-world.

Heard about this on CNN.  Couldn't be happier.  Haven't seen it on the blogosphere.

I'm in for the weekend.  Just had bone grafts; oral surgery.  ECHHHH!

    I want my vet to do my surgery! (5.00 / 1) (#6)

My late dog sheared a molar.  The tooth was a goner, but the dentist filled the hole in the gum with an artificial version of a bone graft.  I was surprised.  I didn't know you could do that.  Worked fine.

What rule changes were made? (none / 0) (#11)
by EL seattle on Sat May 09, 2009 at 09:21:49 AM EST
In the AP story it says:

Under rule changes Obama outlined Friday, the Labor Department will ask states to make exceptions during economic downturns so that the unemployed can keep their benefits if they go to community college or pursue other education or training.

But there aren't many specifics as to what the rule changes were.  (At least as far as I understood the short article and the linked website).

This seems to involve an expansion of Pell grant availability, but unless there's more money added to the Pell program, wouldn't that mean that the unemployed folks that could now apply for Pell support would be competing with the current crop of students for those limited need-based funds?

IMO, the object is to move the bar. (none / 0) (#14)

This is Clintonian in approach.  Put the message out.  Identify support for implementation.  Obama has a different Congress than Clinton.

"The idea here is to fundamentally change our approach to unemployment in this country, so that it's no longer just a time to look for a new job, but is also a time to prepare yourself for a better job," Obama said.

tonight by Justin Verlander, former rookie of the year, in a 1-0 Tigers win.  Complete game, 2 hits, 11 strikeouts.  Verlander's return to form promises great things ahead for the boys from Motown!

Waiting to see if Jeralyn stayed awake through Benjamin Button. I snoozed for a few minutes in the theater. If I had watched it at home on my sofa I would not have lasted an hour. Pretty good movie, but way too long, and too much like Forrest Gump.

    I went to Comcast's so called (none / 0) (#12)

"free" movies and saw a movie I missed the first time around.  It was CAPOTE.  It was very chilling. The actor who played Truman Capote was excellent.  I can see why he won the Academy Award.

    Texting while operating a train? (none / 0) (#5)

Local news is saying one of the Boston train ops may have been texting right before the crash. Isn't this what happened in SoCal?

    Sure is (none / 0) (#9)

I guess train operators are no more likely than car drivers to learn from the mistakes of others.
